GRINDERS AND GAMBLES: Week 9

“Grinders and Gambles” is duct tape for teams in need of help. This list is for deeper leagues or for those in shallower leagues who are picking up players in free agency after waivers have run. Grinders are the guys who will get you some points. They may not have an upside but they will grind out 5-15 points depending on your scoring. Gambles can get you a goose egg but also have tremendous upside.

Due to the nature of MyFantasyLeague.com, specifically the amount of dynasty leagues, deep roster leagues, devy leagues, superflexes and other leagues with more unique variables, the ownership of players will be higher there than on most players so check your wire even if the current ownership stat is high.

QUARTERBACKS

Josh McCown, N.Y. Jets

Current Ownership: MFL 55% / ESPN 29% / CBS 49% / Yahoo! 27% / NFL 8.7%.

His ownership is up. He is just grinding away and he is still available in a ton of leagues. Keep in mind he has some tougher matchups coming, so he needs to be used in a platoon.

Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis

Current Ownership: MFL 33.84% / ESPN 13% / CBS 43% / Yahoo! 13% / NFL 3.4%.

Because bye weeks are brutal and the quarterback position is thin right now. He didn’t fair too badly, but he falls under the gamble category.

Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco

Current Ownership: MFL 33.64% / ESPN 9.7% / Yahoo! 1%.

C.J. Beathard had some pretty decent stats last week … for his yards-per-carry statistic that is. Six rushes for 40 yards isn’t a bad line if you are a running back. Unfortunately for him, he is the quarterback and that hasn’t gone as well.  He is struggling and San Francisco traded for Garoppolo but you are probably looking at Week 13 before you start him.

Drew Stanton, Arizona

Current Ownership: MFL 7.68% / ESPN 2% / CBS 6% / Yahoo! 2% / NFL .1%.

Only because you are in a multi-quarterback league, are desperate, or a masochist. I once had to start Joey Harrington in a league. I am imaging that this will feel the same way. He is playing San Francisco and its soft secondary so if you need a matchup gamble and have nothing else to grab at, he may put some points up.

RUNNING BACKS

Dion Lewis, New England

Current Ownership: MFL 83% / ESPN 44% / CBS 68% / Yahoo! 61% / NFL 23%.

This will be Lewis’ last week on this list as he has trended too far up. If someone drops him because of the bye or he is still out there, grab him. Just keep in mind that he doesn’t stay healthy and make sure you have a Plan B.

Rex Burkhead, New England

Current Ownership: MFL 51% / ESPN 8.8% / CBS 14% / Yahoo! 8% / NFL 2%.

Because New England coach Bill Belichick hates your fantasy football team. Also, see above notes on Dion Lewis’ health. New England will probably just bring back Jonas Gray to spite you .. so gamble.

Kenyan Drake, Miami

Current Ownership: MFL 25% / ESPN 23.9% / CBS 48% / Yahoo! 33% / NFL 2.8%.

Damien Williams, Miami

Current Ownership: MFL 16% / ESPN 9.3% / CBS 23% / Yahoo! 20% / NFL 9.4%.

Drake should be the more exciting of the two and they are some of the hot pickups of the week. Frankly, keep in mind that it is Miami. And for what does Miami exist? To crush my hopes and dreams. Don’t let them crush yours. Flex these guys in a pinch but they are both gambles until we see how things unfold.

Devontae Booker, Denver

Current Ownership: MFL 40% / ESPN 3.1% / CBS 16% / Yahoo! 3% / NFL 1.6%.

Booker only had a few touches but he looked good and could earn more touches. He is a gamble, but he also makes a nice stash in case the injury bug hits.
