Season Projections
A full-time starter for the first time in his career, Burton enjoyed a solid overall breakout campaign as many had predicted (TE6/non-PPR and TE10/PPR) while operating as the fourth receiving option in a revamped and modernized Bears offense. He finished 11th among tight end in targets, 10th in catches, 13th in receiving yards and fourth (tie) in touchdown grabs (second most on the Bears). Burton's production, however, declined noticeably during the second half of the season - he amassed five of his six scoring grabs and 65 percent of his receiving yards during the first half - due to many factors including a lingering groin injury that required offseason surgery and the gradual emergence of lead wideout Allen Robinson. Even though Chicago's starting tight end is expected to return healthy and has room for growth in Year 2 with Mitch Trubisky, Burton comes with more downside than upside. Robinson is expected to command a bigger target share since his connection with Trubisky has improved, and Anthony Miller is a second-year leap candidate. By the way, the Bears will continue to replace the smallish Burton, a "move" tight end, with the bigger Adam Shaheen when they need extra blocking. Shaheen's usage in red-zone packages also makes him a candidate to vulture touchdown grabs every so often. An uptick in passing could help Burton, but Chicago's elite defense doesn't let the team get into many shootouts.
