Season Projections
Herndon's season won't start until Week 5 due to a 4 week suspension to open the season. Making 12 starts in an often dysfunctional bottom-10 Jets offense and shaking off a rocky start to the season, Herndon put together a solid overall 2018 rookie debut. He finished second on New York in receiving across the board, compiling TE15/non-PPR and TE16/PPR stats. Ranked 17th at the position in targets, Herndon's play improved steadily over the course of the season, and so did his chemistry with Sam Darnold. From Week 6 through Week 17, Herndon, known for his soft hands and underrated athleticism, was the sixth-most productive tight end in non-PPR scoring and the ninth-best one in PPR scoring despite uneven week-to-week production, which is typical for rookie tight ends. While his development should remain on the upswing, a huge second-year leap seems unlikely because of stiff competition for targets in what projects as a balanced offensive attack. Slot guy Jamison Crowder and elite every-down tailback Le'Veon Bell will compete with Herndon for looks in the middle of the field, and top wideouts Robby Anderson and Quincy Enunwa are obviously both target worthy. By the way, Herndon has drawn a four-game league suspension (under appeal) for pleading guilty to DWI in connection with a June 2018 car accident. He should still see more than enough action to make a very solid No. 2 with occasional No. 1 upside.
