THE PROGNOSTICATOR: Week 8

Welcome my fantasy brethren to another edition of The Prognosticator, may it brighten your weekend. I stayed away from a lot of games last week and DFS completely because all the analysis pointed to a topsy-turvy week with some odd happenings and a lot of lesser known names expected to perform well. The picture was just so jumbled, not cloudy, but jumbled. We saw the odd week coming, predicted it, and watched it unfold. This week will be a big passing offense week with a lot of scoring in the air and the list of teams that will play well in the air is as long as I think I’ve ever seen it. San Francisco, San Diego, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Washington, Denver, Oakland, Seattle and Pittsburgh will rule the day in the air. That will be a lot of fantasy points. The list for the teams that will run all over their opponents this week is shorter but there is still a lot of opportunity in: Philadelphia, Dallas, New Orleans, Chicago, New England, Houston and Pittsburgh. Enjoy the week because the fantasy scores will be high this week. You are going to need to score well to win this week so make sure your lineup is as tight as you can make it with high scoring players and upside.

How to read the table: The table shows how a team will do Passing and Rushing in the upcoming week of the NFL. Red is HOT, Yellow is WARM, White is NORMAL, Light Blue is COLD and Dark Blue is FREEZING COLD. Play players from teams that are Red and Yellow, avoid players from teams that are Light or Dark Blue and expect average days from teams that are White.

All times are Eastern

Miami Dolphins at Baltimore Ravens – Thursday 8:25pm
I expected the Ravens to cover the spread.. but not by 40. With a down day for most everyone on both teams except for maybe Jay Ajayi. Ajayi did nothing as the Miami offensive line has really broken down.

Minnesota Vikings at Cleveland Browns – Sunday 9:30am
When Aaron Rodgers went down and Brett Hundley still.. uh.. coming along, the Vikings were catapulted to the top of the division by most of the soothsayers. The Browns won’t play well but neither will the Vikings. Minnesota favored by 9.5 points are way too many points for a road team to be favored by, especially when they will struggle to put up points and will want to keep the ball on the ground. The Vikings won’t struggle as much as the Browns but it will still be a struggle. Stay away from this one as it will turn into a defensive chess match. By the way, 13 screws to repair Aaron Rodgers‘ collar bone? Not 12 like his playing number? Why did they have to go with unlucky 13? Something evil is afoot I tell you.

Oakland Raiders at Buffalo Bills – Sunday 1:00pm
In a way it warms the cockles of my heart to see the Bills favored in this. It restores my faith in humanity ever so slightly. Most should know that the Raiders are a good team and they will show it as the best unit on the field in Buffalo this weekend will be when the Raiders throw the ball. Play what you own in their passing game. The Raiders could have really used Marshawn Lynch in this because where the Bills win this is with nice balance, spreading the ball around in a variety of creative ways and running the ball effectively. No big fanfare, no soaring accolades, just a concerted effort from all phases of their game.

Los Angeles Chargers at New England Patriots – Sunday 1:00pm
There are three reasons why New England wins this game and one reason why the Chargers stay in it — somewhat.
1. The Patriots are at home.
2. The Patriots will run the ball well and will run it more than they usually do, simply to keep Philip Rivers off the field.
3. Tom Brady is an excellent game manager.
The one reason the Chargers can stay in it? Philip Rivers tearing through the Patriots secondary like a hot knife through butter.

Atlanta Falcons at New York Jets – Sunday 1:00pm
Jets win! Surprise! Or is it really? The Jets will run the ball well here. Matt Forte was downgraded due to a limited practice so watch his situation closely. If Bilal Powell gets the backfield to himself, you want Powell in. Even if Forte is ready to go on game day, they both make interesting starts. Play the Falcons passing game as they will play well enough, the Falcons will also be fine on the ground too, the problem with their team lies in their red zone offense and truly, some questionable play calling. Atlanta would be better served taking shots at the end zone from 25-yards out than trying to get in close where the opposing defenses have less ground to protect. The Falcons are another favored road team that has to be favored due to public opinion but if you really look at it, you wonder what they’ve truly done to be the favorite?

Favorite: Atlanta Falcons by 4.5
Prediction: New York Jets 23 – Atlanta Falcons 14
