RED ZONE TARGET ANALYSIS: Week 8

Week 8 and we are more than half way through the fantasy regular season. This is do-or-die time for most of us and the worst time to have Keenan Allen, Matt Ryan, and Julio Jones on a bye week. The last few weeks picking up players like Cole Beasley, Ito Smith, and O.J. Howard have helped some players survive these bye week issues and keep their season going. This is also a time for those of us who play in keeper or dynasty leagues to scout players for next season if they are out of it now.

Marquez Valdes-Scatling has filled in admirably for both Cobb and Allison, well enough that this could turn out to be more than just a week-to-week situation. MVS is setting himself up to takeover as the number 2 WR in the Packers offense. If you need someone to fill in for one week I would  check the injury report to make sure Cobb and Allison are out again. If you are in a Dynasty or a Keeper league I would have MVS on my roster already and fully expect him to be the surefire number 2 WR in Green Bay next season.

Zay Jones is just a bye week fill in this week. He has 6 Red Zone opportunities this season, which is saying a lot for a team that is struggling to find the end zone. The Bills are playing New England this week and most certainly will be playing from behind. I am not expecting a huge game but they will need Jones in the red zone to make the game competitive.

Marshawn Lynch‘s season ended for him this week when he was put on the IR, and even without playing he is still a top 10 RB in red zone opportunities. Someone will have to step in and take that production and the best candidate is Richard. I know the Raiders have Doug Martin on the roster but he is Doug Martin and that’s all you need to know about him. Richard has been productive as a receiving running back, mostly because the Raiders are always playing from behind. I expect that he will add about 10-12 rushes a game now with Lynch out and dominate the touches going forward. If that is the case Richard would be a great player to add for now and with Lynch most likely gone next season for the future also.

If you have been watching the Buccaneers the last few weeks you may have noticed that rookie Ronald Jones has been taking more and more of the carries, especially in the red zone. The Buccaneers did not draft him in the 2nd round for him to warm the bench, so you can expect his carries to continue to increase. I would love to stash him for next season but I also think you can use him to cover a bye week also.

TIGHT END RED ZONE OPPORTUNITIES

Many teams are going to a two TE set more and more and when you have two TEs as talented as Ertz and Goedert you need to use them. Next season Zach Ertz is eligible to become a free agent and with the type of money he should expect to get I can see Philadelphia letting him walk next season. Goedert is the perfect replacement for Ertz next season and is talented enough to warrant using this season.
