Rookie Review – Week 8

A few rookies continue to play well and others provide surprises.  Find out who is doing what below.

Quarterback

Jameis Winston – Tampa Bay – There is a ray of hope for the Tampa Bay offense. Maybe it just needed Mike Evans to get healthy. Winston looked pretty good throwing on Sunday, completing 21-of-29 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns. With Doug Martin running well and the chemistry building between Winston and Evans, the offense should be good to watch the rest of the season. As Winston learns and grows, he may be a good pickup because the defense is terrible and he may have to throw a lot.

Marcus Mariota – Tennessee – Inactive. Tennessee is hoping that Mariota can practice on Wednesday.

Garrett Grayson – New Orleans – Inactive

Sean Mannion – St. Louis – Inactive

Bryce Petty – New York Jets – Inactive

Brett Hundley – Green Bay – Inactive

Trevor Siemian – Denver – Inactive

Running Back

Todd Gurley – St. Louis

St. Louis RB Todd Gurley.

I said on the Fantasy Sharks Feeding Frenzy podcast that if I had to select any one player in fantasy play last week, it would have been Gurley. He did not disappoint with 19 carries for 128 yards and two touchdowns while also catching four passes for another 35 yards. Gurley is proving that St. Louis was correct in selecting him, he is a beast. He may not even be at full health yet. The way he is playing right now, he will be a top-5 pick next year in fantasy drafts.

Melvin Gordon – San Diego – It was rumored that San Diego would have Gordon inactive due to his injury, but didn’t. Gordon did not see a carry until the third quarter and only had seven carries on the day for 29 yards in the loss to Oakland on Sunday. It is questionable that he even played considering that Oakland had a big lead early. Why not just sit him and let him get healthy? It may also be an issue with his ball security, so we will have to see how San Diego moves forward.

T.J. Yeldon – Jacksonville – Jacksonville has been doing well on offense lately and Yeldon has been a major contributor. He ran the ball 20 times for 115 yards and a touchdown on Sunday and could have done even more. Jacksonville decided to give the ball to Toby Gerhart four straight plays near the goal line and he did nothing. I am pretty sure that Yeldon could have punched the ball in for a second touchdown. Hopefully, Jacksonville learned a lesson and will give Yeldon those carries in the future.

Ameer Abdullah – Detroit – It figured to be a tough day for Abdullah going against a very underrated Minnesota defense. He did not get many carries on Sunday with only eight for 43 yards. He did have a nice burst for 13 yards and shows promise, but Detroit needs to improve on the offensive line.

Tevin Coleman – Atlanta – Coleman only had three carries for 14 yards on Sunday. He will not get many looks with Devonta Freeman playing so well.

Duke Johnson – Cleveland – Cleveland has a full backfield and split the carries, so none of the backs are worth much in fantasy. Johnson only had six carries for 17 yards, but he did see a lot of use in the passing game catching all seven balls thrown to him for 73 yards. He is only worth a look in points per reception leagues.

David Johnson – Arizona – Johnson only had three carries for 5 yards and two catches for 19 yards. He is currently third on the depth chart and will only be useful if Chris Johnson or Andre Ellington get hurt.

Matt Jones – Washington – Washington came back from 24 points down to Tampa Bay to have the franchise’s biggest all-time comeback. With Washington down by so much so early, it took away a large portion of the running game and Jones only had nine carries for 29 yards and 22 receiving yards on three catches. The good news, Jones had many more carries than Alfred Morris and may have taken over as lead back. Make sure to keep up on the news because if he has, his value will rise.

Jeremy Langford – Chicago – Bye week

Jalston Fowler – Tennessee – Did Not Play/No Stat Line

Javorius “Buck” Allen – Baltimore – Baltimore found the running against Arizona tough on Monday night. Allen only had three carries for 25 yards and one reception for 10 yards. Allen should be owned by all Justin Forsett owners, but is not worth a spot on other teams.

Mike Davis – San Francisco – Inactive

David Cobb – Tennessee – Injured Reserve

Jay Ajayi – Miami – Injured Reserve. Looks ready to return in Week 9.

Karlos Williams – Buffalo – Inactive

Michael Burton – Detroit – Did Not Play/No Stat Line

Cameron Artis–Payne – Carolina – One carry for no yards.

Josh Robinson – Indianapolis – Inactive.

Aaron Ripkowski – Green Bay – Did Not Play/No Stat Line

Marcus Murphy – New Orleans – Did Not Play/No Stat Line

Zach Zenner – Detroit – Sent to IR

Jarryd Hayne – San Francisco – Inactive

Thomas Rawls – Seattle – Seattle beat up San Francisco last Thursday in every facet of the game. Rawls spelled Marshawn Lynch a few times and gained 32 yards on six carries and added two catches for 9 yards. Rawls is insurance for all Marshawn Lynch owners.

Terron Ward – Atlanta – One catch for 7 yards. Not much to see here.
