SOS: Matchups To Avoid And Enjoy – Weeks 1 & 2

Which players have difficult matchups the first two weeks of the season and which players have favorable matchups the first two weeks of the season? Here are three Quarterbacks with difficult matchups and three quarterbacks with favorable matchups to start the year.

Difficult Quarterback Matchups in Weeks 1 and 2:

Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs

Week 1 – @ Los Angeles Chargers

Week 2 – @ Pittsburgh Steelers

Opening up the first two games of the 2018 season on the road will be a tall task for an inexperienced quarterback with just one career start on his resume. To make matters worse, the Los Angeles Chargers allowed just 17 passing touchdowns in 2017, which ranked 3rd in the NFL. Their Week 2 opponent, the Pittsburgh Steelers, allowed an average of 201 passing yards per game in 2017, which ranked tied-4th in the NFL.

Furthermore, according to our very own Fantasy Sharks Strength of Schedule Tool, Mahomes has only two “Very Easy” rated matchups the entire season – Week 3 vs. San Francisco and Week 9 at Cleveland. As a first-year starter, you should temper your expectations of him as he eases into the complexities of running an NFL offense.

Russell Wilson, QB, Seattle Seahawks

Week 1 –  @ Denver Broncos

Week 2 –  @ Chicago Bears

Just like Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson’s Seahawks will be on the road for the first two games of the 2018 season. A trip to Mile High Stadium in Week 1 could be troublesome for the new look Seattle offense. Doug Baldwin is currently banged up with a knee injury, the Broncos now have a star-studded pass rushing attack led by Von Miller and the highly touted rookie, Bradley Chubb, and have one of the leagues best cornerbacks in Chris Harris Jr. On top of their vaunted pass rush, the Broncos allowed an average of 201 passing yards per game in 2017, which was tied-4th in the NFL. I know you’re not going to pass on Russell Wilson just because he plays Broncos in Week 1. That said, I do not expect a 25+ fantasy point week out of Wilson in Week 1.

Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants

Week 1 – vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Week 2 – vs. Dallas Cowboys

Is anyone else feverishly anticipating the Odell Beckham Jr. vs. Jalen Ramsey matchup in Week 1? I know I am. Eli Manning will be challenged the first week of the season as he squares up against the best fantasy Defense from a season ago. The Jacksonville Jaguars allowed a league-low 2,718 passing yards in 2017. To put that in perspective, that is the least amount of passing yards allowed in a single season since the New York Jets allowed just 2,459 passing yards in 2009. The Jaguars are ripe with talent on the defensive side of the ball and will make it difficult for Manning to move the chains in their Week 1 matchup.

If you draft Eli Manning, who can be had for practically nothing this year, be sure to draft a Quarterback like Mitchell Trubisky (who plays the Green Bay Packers in Week 1) to start in his place the first week of the season.
