Ottawa @Calgary 9:30pm ML +165 5 No Bet

Recap: I’ll admit, betting against Carolina is a bit of a “gulper” as it was last night, beating our Panthers 4-2. Both teams are under-rated and when two good teams meet, it can be tricky to bet. We had the power of trends and stats on our side but sometimes, that just doesn’t matter as we lost the Florida bet. A good win on the day though and a winning week to boot. It’s always nice to notch a winner.

Recap: Except for losing Winnipeg, we danced the minefield dance and won last night but what a minefield it was. Montreal scored early and often to essentially end that game before it even started. It is really, really hard to come back from a 5-0 hole in hockey, which Winnipeg was in going into the 3rd period. Montreal out scored them in the 3rd period too (2-1) for a 7-1 final. It was a huge night for upsets, we wisely backed off Minnesota (as Arizona beat them 5-2) while both of the two strongest favorites on the card lost. Vancouver doubled up Toronto 4-2 and Anaheim beat Colorado in Colorado 5-4 in OT. We steered clear of most of the mess. Last night was a parlay buster for many I am sure. It was good to have our two PL bets come in, that helps a ton with getting favorable odds.  The Kings upending the Blues as an underdog pick was a real nice winner too.

Recap: The Caps have been hot but we were really just chasing the odds in that one. Minnesota and the Parlay rolled in for us. Though the parlay wasn’t as easy of a win as perhaps the odds makers suggested with both heavily favored teams winning in OT. The one that hurt was the Kings. That bet was a winner until with just 44 seconds to play, St. Louis scored to tie it up to bring it to OT and the the Blues scored again in OT to steal victory from our grasp. The underdog Kings was the right bet, until it wasn’t.

Update: There is some weirdness in the odds today. When you work with the odds every day, when something changes, you can feel it. The over/unders have been pushed down half a point in general. I wonder if the house has been taking some losses on under bets lately? Up until today, it’s been fairly standard, if it was a low scoring game expected the over/under would be set at 5.5 and if a high scoring game, 6.5. Never have I seen so many 5’s and 6’s. Five is a disgustingly low number in hockey since anytime a game goes to OT, you are guaranteed that one more goal will be scored. 5.5 gave us a chance, a 2-2 tie would result in a 3-2 win one way or the other and a win for us, all these 5’s all of a sudden bear watching. There will be a lot more pushes because of it but it’s just interesting that everything seems to be skewed down a bit and there’s a chance we can take advantage with some over betting if this becomes the new norm. Be careful placing under bets (we do have one today at 6) until things change. The favorites too seem weighted even heavier, I think to try and trap the casual bettor. It’s forced us to try and counter with a 2-team parlay of two heavy favorites tonight (Florida -150 and Toronto -162) that together pay a favorable +171.

Recap: What a mess that turned into. Lines were weird, totals were off, it was a strange day indeed. As it turned out, walking away was the best move. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh were projected to score around 5 goals between the two of them which put us safely in under 6.5 territory. It was one of the few lines that wasn’t oddly moved down to 5 or 6 yesterday.; the Flyers and Pens scored 7 instead, turning the under into a loser.

Recap: Just as Edmonton was starting to enter the conversation as one of the few teams that could legitimately challenge Toronto, they give up SIX to lost 6-1 and push the under we were on to an over. The one goal for Edmonton was all part of the plan, the six goals for Toronto was not. We were one goal off in that bet and one goal off in L.A. where Arizona won 3-2. Back at it.

Carolina @Nashville 8:00pm O 5.5  15 Locked W +13.50
Tampa Bay @Dallas 8:30pm PL +163 5 Locked W +8.15

Recap: Detroit let us down losing 4-1 to Columbus, they had been starting to play so much better too and getting great odds on top of it at +163. The other three bets though all rolled in as winners, which calculates out to a respectable 40.1% return for Tuesday. We would have won the Islanders bet if we placed it but at -148, the odds were just a little too steep. It’s really why Ottawa was intriguing because at +220, those odds were grand and like we saw the other night, if San Jose can beat a -225 Colorado, it sure seemed like Ottawa would have an even easier time at trying to beat Montreal. At +220, it sure was a nice big number but mid-day, Ottawa had made a switch to Daccord in net and that was enough to shoo that bet off the board. As mentioned, that no bet was fortuitous as Montreal won their first game for new coach Ducharme 3-1. Overall though, good win today, we’ll take whatever we can get.

Recap: Living on the edge. Florida and Carolina went to OT but it was the Hurricanes that pulled it out. We were chasing the odds and took the dog and we were oh so close. The only real surprise where I shake my head was the Minnesota and Vegas Under. With Fleury and Talbot in goal we had a much lower total predicted, in fact, we were projecting a 2-2 game with a third goal coming for one of the teams in OT which would have still left us under the 5.5 total but instead, the game did go to OT as projected, but the Knights won 5-4 in a high scoring affair against two solid goalies and defenses.. go figure? The Wild scored all four of their goals in the second period. Wild. Then just a note on Colorado and San Jose, Colorado was a -225 favorite but we stayed away because it was.. well.. -225! Ridiculous odds. But Colorado didn’t win, San Jose scored four times in the 3rd period to crush them 6-2. It just goes to show that if there’s even a glimmer that an underdog can win, it’s probably worth the bet in hockey.
