The Hive – Week Five Edition

The Hive – Week 5 Edition

Week 5
already? Hard to believe a quarter of the season is already gone! Week 4 provided
some outstanding IDP performances from many of the big names in the land of IDP’s, including Jared Allen, who won
many a fantasy owner their game this week with his ridiculous Monday Night
Football performance. There were also some relative unknowns who tore it up
last week, such as former CFL stud Cameron Wake, who went nuts in place of the
injured Joey Porter. Let’s dive in to the week 5 action, as there are some IDP
superstars on bye weeks, some on the mend, and some are even on the bench right
now.

Giddyup!
Brian Cushing, Bernard Pollard

SINS! – Ryans/Diles,

week 6 bye. He will likely kill it for 2-3 weeks and get hurt again, but he
should be on your radar if you are weak at DB.)

TEN

Giddyup!
Cortland Finnegan (listed as questionable, check the Twitter feed for further

cause)

Hellno! –
Joey Porter (healthy, but I don’t like the matchup), Gibril Wilson (HA-HA)

Now let’s
turn our attention to some guys who are more name than game in the world of
IDP. Some players get drafted every season, even though they haven’t put up IDP
starter numbers in years, or sometimes ever! Others have had a change in
scenery or scheme that has devalued the player greatly. If you are guilty of
having one (or more) of these players on your roster outside of extremely deep
leagues, it is time to cut bait and live in the now!

DL’s:

DeWayne
White DET – White has been on DL preseason sleeper lists each season since he
signed with the Lions, but hasn’t yet delivered on the hype. He is currently
the #132nd ranked DL in my dynasty league, and that is following on
the heels of a disappointing finish to an injury plagued 2008 that found him as
the #36 ranked DL. During his last injury free season (2007), he wasn’t even able
to crack the top 20 DL’s, as he finished at #22 overall. With Jim Schwartz
loving the play of former Packer Jason Hunter and speedy pass rusher Cliff
Avril in the mix, White will begin to lose snaps even when he is 100% healthy,
which means you should ditch him now if you haven’t already.

Chris
Long STL – A case of a player who has never done jack, but is on a lot of IDP
rosters right now for no good reason. He is being outplayed by old people
(James Hall and Leonard Little), and has ZERO sacks through 1/4 of the season. In
shallow IDP leagues Long has no business on your roster until he starts to
produce.

LB’s:

Antonio
Pierce NYG – From the “Pssst: its 2009 now” file. Pierce has not even been a
top 30 LB for the last 2 seasons, yet he is still on a lot of IDP rosters. He
was a top 10 LB in 2006, and has done little since then. You can likely do
much, much better at LB, even in deeper leagues.

Will
Witherspoon STL – After narrowly missing out on being a top 10 LB in 2007,
Witherspoon moved to the less productive WILL position in 2008, and ended up as
the #68 ranked LB in 2008. And he didn’t even miss any games! He is off to
another terrible start in 2009 ranking as the #45 LB thus far. In my mind, the
only 2 Rams IDP’s that should be on anyone’s roster in average leagues are
Atogwe and Laurinaitis. Show Witherspoon the door.

Demeco
Ryans HOU – This one is tougher, and by no means am I suggesting dyno leaguers
cut bait on the 25 year old Ryans. But for those of you who play in shallow IDP
leagues where you only start 1-2 LB’s, unless it’s a 16 team league you should
be able to find a better LB right now than the 30th ranked Ryans. He
finished 2008 as the 20th ranked LB, but with Brian Cushing in the
Texans LB corps now he seems to be the most productive LB from a fantasy
perspective, and Zach Diles is getting a slice of the action too. With his lack
of big plays (1 forced fumble, 0 sacks, 0 fumbles recovered and 0 interceptions
thus far in 09) if you are expecting more than 4-6 tackles a week from Ryans
you are probably expecting too much.

DB’s:

Kerry
Rhodes NYJ – Rhodes is the #57 ranked DB right
now, this coming off a 2008 season that saw him finish as the #32 ranked DB.
Like Ed Reed before him, offenses wised up to the skill set that Rhodes brings to the table and just stopped throwing the
ball near him. He is still good for a blow up game here and there, but speaking
from personal experience, trying to figure out when those games are going to be
is absolutely maddening.

Adrian
Wilson ARI – Another longtime Hive favorite just isn’t getting it done for IDP
owners these days. Wilson
dealt with injury issues for portions of the 2008 season and finished as the
#41 ranked DB. He is off to an even worse start in 2009, as he is ranked at #68
among defensive backs. The Cardinals have moved to a 3-4 scheme and Wilson gets less time in
the box than he did in his glory days (2004-2006), and isn’t getting the big
play or even the tackle opportunities that he used to. Its probably time to
move on, though I can’t bring myself to cut this guy in my dynasty league. At
least not yet.

Gibril
Wilson MIA – So much for the theory that Wilson’s ridiculous 2008 stats had as
much to do with his talent as it did with the fact that the Raiders front seven
is a sieve. Wilson
is a terrible FS, which is why I questioned this signing from the jump. He can’t
cover, and he most certainly isn’t getting any snaps at SS as long as Yeremiah
Bell is around. While Tyvon Branch is killing it for his IDP owners in Wilson’s old spot, Gibril
is bumbling around as the #90 ranked DB. I love being right.

That
about wraps it up for week 5! Don’t forget to check out http://twitter.com/thehiveIDP for all
the latest IDP injury news and opinions on this week’s matchups! Good luck in
week 5 and I hope to see you back here again next week.
