The Prognosticator – Week 14

Welcome my fantasy brethren to another edition of The Prognosticator.  May it be your little bundle of joy.

It’s been our pleasure serving you these many weeks of the 2005 fantasy football season.  We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve kissed two bucks goodbye but through it all I hope you’ve enjoyed your experience here.  We’re not some big corporation, heck, we don’t even have investors (not that I haven’t had a ton of offers), we’re just a bunch of guys that enjoy dishing it out for you week to week.

I’m proud of the group I’ve assembled here, some I’ve asked personally to help work on this project and countless others have come out of the ether to contribute in ways so profound that I could never repay them justly for what they’ve created.  We’ve had contributors work their way into larger roles in the fantasy football community with bigger players, gaining their notoriety and calling card here.  We have some folks that work tirelessly behind the scenes not interested in their name in lights.  It takes a large team of folks with a variety of skills to make a project like this work and I can say unequivocally that I am honored to be among them.

We have some tremendous advice throughout the site from some knowledgeable professionals who take what they do both here and in their ‘real’ lives very seriously.  I think it shows, hopefully you think it does too.

Enjoy Week 14!

Red – Hot

Yellow – Warm

Chicago Bears at Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday 1:00p

The Bears will keep this one on the ground as it is their only option. Da’ Bears haven’t exactly been winning games with their offense. Expect Thomas Jones to check in with a decent day.

As precited here, the Steelers played a good game last week but in the end, just couldn’t quite keep pace with the Bengals. Look for the Steelers to grind this one out and sneak past the Bears. No one will walk away with good fantasy statistics from the Steelers and I recommend you put them on the bench. I know I have Willie Parker on my bench for the first time this season.

Prediction: Steelers 24 – Bears 21

Oakland Raiders at New York Jets Sunday 1:00p

Let me get this straight, Norv Turner is going to get the boot so he makes a QB switch? It’s a desperation move that won’t work. These two teams, as sad as it is, are evenly matched and there will not be a big stat to write home about. Most of the players on both sides of the ball will have very average days. If you’re deciding between LaMont Jordan or Willis McGahee this week I’d still take Jordan but don’t expect a bunch of numbers.

Prediction: Raiders 20 – Jets 18

St. Louis Rams at Minnesota Vikings Sunday 1:00p

The Rams tossed the pill quite effectively last week even with no name at QB. Expect more of the same as the Rams rock and roll on top on this soft Vikings secondary. I’m very concerned with Steven Jackson in this one as I think he’ll be limited.

The Vikings have done nothing but win under Brad Johnson and I do not expect that to stop here. As we said last week, although the word on the street was that the Rams were the easiest team to throw on, they were going to over compensate. They will do the same here and the Vikings are going to get a big day out of Michael Bennett. That’s right, that Michael Bennett, you heard it hear first and probably last.

Prediction: Vikings 34 – Rams 20

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers Sunday 1:00p

The Bucs will try and run and the Panthers know that. The formula against the Bucs is an easy one, dare Chris Simms to beat you. Joey Galloway is a one man machine and without him, Chris Simms would probably not be the starting QB of the Bucs right now. The Panthers will contain the Bucs running game though the Bucs will have some victories of their own on the ground too.

The Buccaneers D is a good one and the Panthers will feel it. Jake Delhomme has been playing better after working hard to not focus on one receiver as defenses were reading him too easily. The Panthers won’t run away with this but they do have better balance and generally better talent at a lot of key positions.

Prediction: Panthers 28 – Buccaneers 20

Houston Texans at Tennessee Titans Sunday 1:00p

The Texans will play a solid game of football as the Titans D is just plain poor. They will have good balance and will move the chains most of the day. A number of people are predicting a blow out day for Andre Johnson, and that is very possible but I don’t think so. The Texans will spread the ball around a little more than they have been doing though Johnson could put up some decent 4th quarter stats to push him over the top.

The Titans will do a little bit of everything as they’ve suddenly become a great passing team. Look for Steve McNair to get on the same page with perhaps Drew Bennett if he didn’t just fall into something and hurt himself. McNair makes a nice start on Sunday.

Prediction: Titans 24 – Texans 19

New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills Sunday 1:00p

The Patriots are on the way up again after suffering for a number of weeks. Just watch, they’re going to go on a roll. They aren’t the SuperBowl team they were last year but they are the best in the East and depending on their playoff match ups may not be the one and out a lot of people are predicting. They are getting stronger at the right time. Look for a big day from Tom Brady and friends as Deion Branch reminds us he was the Super Bowl MVP. The return of Corey Dillon really opens them up on offense and they return to one of the better units in the league.

The Bills are spiraling down into the dark depths of despair. They have talent but it seems no one wants to apply it anymore. A side note: The Patriots HATE playing in Buffalo because of the reception they always receive. When the tour bus pulls into town there’s always rowdy hecklers waiting for them. As a Patriot player described once, “Even old grand mother’s are gesturing at you with their middle finger as the bus drives by.” It’s just that kind of town.

Prediction: Patriots 24 – Bills 19

Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday 1:00p

My tip of the week would be to play the Colts passing game! Brilliant! The Jaguars always play the Colts tough and while the Colts will win, it won’t be easy. The Jaguars will play them tight and hard. This is a potential game for the Colts to lose the perfect bid and it may very well be the one but instead they just eek by the Jags.

Jaguars play well as a team with no superstar presence and no superstar stats for your fantasy weekend.

Prediction: Colts 30 – Jaguars 28

Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals Sunday 1:00p

Look for a mini surprise in the passing game from the Browns as they pass a lot to try and get some points back. Reuben Droughns will be ineffective because of it.

The Bengals romp and you play all your Bengals. Carson Palmer, Chad Johnson, TJ Houshmanzadeh, Rudi Johnson, heat and serve. Bon Apetit!

Prediction: Bengals 35 – Browns 17

Washington Redskins at Arizona Cardinals Sunday 4:05p

The Redskins are the favorite but the Cardinals are the team that will win. The ‘skins will run most of the day as their passing game isn’t clicking like it used to. Clinton Portis receives a very active call to duty.

The Cardinals on the other hand throw the ball well. When Larry Fitzgerald AND Anquan Boldin walk away each game with stud WR numbers, there’s a lot of balls to go around. Fantasy wise, Boldin makes the better receiver and he will step up and win this one for the Cards.

Prediction: Cardinals 24 – Redskins 23

San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks Sunday 4:05p

Uhhhh .. OK. Shaun Alexander will run senseless. We may even see Maurice Morris for a little while.

Prediction: Seahawks 40 – 49’ers 18

New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles Sunday 4:05p

The Eagles are reeling. Look for Eli Manning and company to work the Eagles from the air. Tiki Barber will be a more effective receiver against the Eagles than a running back and the Giants will feed him the ball a lot from the air. In point per reception leagues, Tiki makes an excellent play.

The Eagles no longer have much of anything. Their only hope is to pass and pass they will as the only player they had left was Brian Westbrook and he’s now on the shelf. Greg Lewis and Reggie Brown are going to get a lot of looks and a lot of opportunity. It doesn’t take a genius coach to know that the only weapon the Eagles have left is L.J. Smith so he will be doubled every second of every play.

Prediction: Giants 20 – Eagles 19

Miami Dolphins at San Diego Chargers Sunday 4:15p

The Dolphins will be better served passing on the Chargers and they will be forced into it. Avoid the Dolphins running game like George Michael in a public restroom.

I’m going on the assumption that LaDainian Tomlinson will play as his injury shouldn’t prevent him too much from participating. The Chargers feed off him and they will dominate in every facet of the game.

Prediction: Chargers 37 – Dolphins 17

Baltimore Ravens at Denver Broncos Sunday 4:15p

The Broncos will run the ball – a lot.  Game Over.  Move along, nothing to see here.

Prediction: Broncos 33 – Ravens 18

Kansas City Chiefs at Dallas Cowboys Sunday 4:15p

I’ve seen a number of fellow analysts call for a reduction in Larry Johnson’s impressive totals against the Cowboys as the ‘boys have been playing some stout D lately. I’m not in their camp and fall squarely in the, “Until he shows me he can’t tool every team in this league, I’m never picking against him” camp. We’re all very familiar with LT but LJ is right on par. LT may be the better back but LJ has the better run blocking which evens everything out.

The Cowboys have been solid and they will be solid here. They do well when spreading the ball around and again, that is something they do well. Expect a lot of players to touch the ball and be in the box score on Monday.

Prediction: Cowboys 26 – Chiefs 25

Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers Sunday 8:30p

For some odd reason I think the Lions can run on the Packers and will try to do so. Most fill in coaches like to run the ball a bunch their first time out. The only question will be who is this teams QB for the remainder of the season. Jeff Garcia was Mooch’s boy and is not this franchise’s future. The Lions would be better off playing Joey Harrington just to audition him for trade morsels this off season.

The Packers will do OK against the Lions. They have a lot of holes but even they can handle the Lions. No big day for anyone but everyone will play fine and make serviceable starts.

Prediction: Packers 23 – Lions 15

New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons Monday 9:00p

Ouch.

Expect a Falcons team devoted to running the football as that’s really all they’ll need to do. No sense risking Michael Vick or some of their other players. It wouldn’t surprise me to see TJ Duckett carrying the ball more than he usually does on Monday. The Falcons will just need to go through the motions to walk away victors. Their biggest concern should be to not put a star player in a position where they could hurt themselves. Believe me, Michael Vick has already had the speaking to about not trying to gain the extra yard. Just go down, we can punt, and we still won’t have anything to worry about.

Prediction: Falcons 24 – Saints 13
