The Prognosticator – Week 5

Week 5

Welcome my fantasy brethren to another edition of The Prognosticator.  May it pick more winners than losers.  Tough week against the spread last week but fantasy wise we did well.  A short week this week since me and my lovely will be celebrating our 9th year of marital bliss on Wednesday, which is the night I usually write the Progno.  For some reason the weight of thousands never does quite add up to one little lady.  So I apologize for the brevity of this column.  I’ll be back in full force next week!  Smack your opponent around for me will ya?

Quick snapshot of the week, is to look for the 49’ers to rebound in a very big way against the hapless Lions.  It is just what they need at just the right time.  The return of Clinton Portis (he should be returning) will be an eventful one as he picks up right where he left off.  The Vikings are going to continue to look like a playoff team and look for a spark in the Raiders running game this week.  Finally, the Giants are going to light up the night sky as they pass often with success on the Dolphins.

All times are Eastern

Wagers
Initial Bankroll: $500 Geoffrey Dollars.
Current Bankroll: $435 Geoffrey Dollars.
Last Week: Lost $55 on the Jets.

Freaking Parcells!!  A lot more wrong with the Jets than I thought.

This Week: $55 to win $50 on the Redskins +5.5 over the Eagles.

Arizona Cardinals at Dallas Cowboys – Sunday 1:00pm

*** Low Score of the Week Award ***

The Cardinals show flashes but they’re not a good team and the Cowboys traditionally own the Cards.  Parcell’s has his team riding high right now.

Prediction: Cowboys 20 – Cardinals 11  (Cowboys -7)

Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers – Sunday 1:00pm

*** High Score of the Week Award ***

Till the Seahawks show a sign of weakness, I believe.  Look for the Seahawks to shred the Packers secondary but the Packers have some surprises of their own.  In particular, a healthy Donald Driver.

Prediction: Seahawks 31 – Packers 27  (Packers -2.5)

New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers – Sunday 1:00pm

The Saints will struggle mightily against this stout Panthers front four and the Panthers will run Stephen Davis till his legs fall off.  It really is as simple as that.   Do not under estimate the Panthers, they are going to win a pile of games this year.

Prediction: Panthers 24 – Saints 14  (Panthers -7)

Minnesota Vikings at Atlanta Falcons – Sunday 1:00pm

There is just too much firepower here for the Falcons to deal with.  The Falcons will have mini successes against the Vikings but if they fall behind quickly, which they should, the gameplan unravels quickly.

Prediction: Vikings 30 – Falcons 24  (Vikings -4)

Cincinnati Bengals at Buffalo Bills – Sunday 1:00pm

Running game won’t have Corey Dillon, not that they had a running game.  Bills have been stinking lately but I have to believe they can grind this one out.  Bengals D plays better than most think.

Prediction: Bills 21 – Bengals 14  (Bills -8)

Tennessee Titans at New England Patriots – Sunday 1:00pm

Can the Patriots stop McNair?  Can the Patriots slow down McNair?  Not a chance.  Bad match up for the Pats as the Titans throw Bill Belicheck defense type looks with their offense!  Who’s going to be confused by whom is what I want to know.

Prediction: Titans 23 – Patriots 17  (Titans -1.5)

Miami Dolphins at NY Giants – Sunday 1:00pm

*** QB of the Week Award: Kerry Collins ***

Great game but the passing game of Collins to Toomer for the important plays and Collins to Hilliard for the short yardage nickel and dime stuff will keep the chains moving for the Giants.  Watch out for Chris Chambers in this one.

Prediction: Giants 24 – Dolphins 23  (Even)

Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs – Sunday 1:00pm

*** RB of the Week Award: Clinton Portis or Mike Anderson ***

Does it get any better than this?  The battle of two 4-0 teams that some say are the #1 and #2 teams in the NFL.  Sparks will fly.  If you’re a fan of football, do not miss this game.  Look for typical Broncos run the ball right at you type of football.  If Clinton Portis plays, he will have a big day.  The Chiefs always play well with their speed but the Broncos can keep up here and there.

Prediction: Broncos 29 – Chiefs 26  (Chiefs -3.5)

Oakland Raiders at Chicago Bears – Sunday 1:00pm

Both teams are going to emphasize the run.  The Raiders because they want to as it is the key to beating the Bears and the Bears because they have to, they can’t do anything else.

Prediction: Raiders 27 – Bears 17  (Raiders -4)

San Diego Chargers at Jacksonville Jaguars – Sunday 4:05pm

David Boston and Jimmy Smith return!  So what.

Prediction: Jaguars 21 – Chargers 20  (Jaguars -3)

Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles – Sunday 4:15pm

Let me get this straight, the Redskins sit on top of the NFC East and the Eagles sit on the bottom of that same division, yet the Eagles are favored by 5 1/2 points?  The Eagles can win but the Redskins have better balance.  Trying to shut down both Coles and Gardner while trying to slow down Betts and Canidate is a very tall order with a banged up Eagles secondary.  Lavar Arrington can cause havoc with what the Eagles try to do in their short passing game as he is a pure athlete and Champ Bailey is going to take away a receiver automatically from McNabb.  Smoot on the other side is not someone you want to tangle with either.  I just don’t see an Eagles victory but they are favored by a decent amount of points.  Go figure?

Prediction: Redskins 23 – Eagles 17  (Eagles -5.5)

Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49’ers – Sunday 4:15pm

The return of Steve Mariucci to San Francisco will mark this game and look for his old team to spank his behind six ways to Tuesday.  I don’t really know what that means as I just made it up, but it sounds like it could be some saying?

Prediction: 49’ers 31 – Lions 17  (49’ers -7)

Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers – Sunday 8:30pm

The Steelers always beat up the Browns even when the Steelers have been the underdog.  It’s like beer and buffalo wings, they just go together.  Tim Couch?  Kelly Holcomb?  It really doesn’t matter till the Browns get a running game.  You folks are still holding onto Zereoue or you tried to trade for him when he was down to dirt for value right?  It’s just going to get better as the Steelers have a cake walk of a rushing schedule.

Prediction: Steelers 24 – Browns 14  (Steelers -6.5)

Indianapolis Colts at Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Monday 9:00pm

Just a bevy of awesome games this week and this one is no exception.  Two great teams and Tony Dungy returns to Tampa.  Our Paul Joyce is going to have an easy time picking his Games to Watch but can he rank them?  Let’s lay that challenge down right now.  I happen to know that the Titans/Patriots game in the mix, with all the other great games, may just send him over the edge!

I know these are the Bucs that we’re talking about but the Colts showed me something last week.  This is a tough one for Edgerrin James to return to for sure.  Tony Dungy has his Colts playing well and the Bucs are too.  Plus he has an impressive first name.  We’re taking the Colts and Peyton Manning in a squeaker.  Remember, the Colts haven’t lost a game and the Bucs, for as much press as their defense gets, have.

Prediction: Colts 27 – Bucs 23  (Bucs -4.5)
