The Prognosticator – Week 6

Welcome my fantasy brethren to another edition of The Prognosticator. May it be your windmill to tilt at. A fun week this week as a reader demands this column be ripped from this site! To do this, you have to have iron skin and believe me folks, this stuff no longer gets to me but sometimes I just have to share. Reader Brett checks in with a personal note to me that says:

Tony Holm,

I dont know how much football you have watched in your life, but from reading your latest predictions, I dont understand how someone continues to let you write articles on this website…….Every single one of the games your predicted had several touchdowns scored in every game……..are you that oblivous?? have you not watched the NFL lately? Do you honestly think that the BIlls and the Dolphins and the Bears and the Browns are going to total 12 touchdowns total between both games????? HOW DO YOU WRITE THIS CRAP???? You obviously must be in last place in your fantasy leagues because you dont watch enough NFL football……..Start using your little brain to come up with the scores and stop guessing…….If your predictions are so high scoring, why dont you bet all the overs in the games??? I’ll tell you why, because you’d be one broke lousy predictor! Thank you for reading

Brett

Hey Brett! What up brutha! You are sooooo the man. Thanks for reading and thanks for pointing out I was predicting an increase in scoring last week.

About five minutes later this comes in on my “administrator” Email account for the site.

Someone get this guy off the website……..the scores of the games he predicted are ridiculous…….get people that know football on this site!!! Count the total of all the scores of the games he predicted and see how many touchdowns he thinks will be scored………you will then notice that he is not that bright or doesnt watch football, thank you

Brett

Brett, I wanted to assure you that your concerns will be sent up the chain, all the way to the top and I’ll leave it up to him to decide whether I stay on here or not. Fair is fair after all and I appreciate your contribution to our program.

Bye Teams

Arizona Cardinals – Philadelphia Eagles

Green Bay Packers – San Francisco 49ers

Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears Sunday 1:00p

The Vikings sure aren’t impressing anyone quickly. Ownership has given Mike Tice a vote of confidence and I can only assume from that gesture, Tice has pictures. Michael Bennett was stud capable over the past few season yet here he is, doing nothing. Mewelde Moore was running wild in this offense yet finally, a glimmer. Moe Williams served amicably in his role as both starter and goal-line back over the past few years yet he doesn’t even see the field. I have to wonder just what motivational techniques Coach Tice and the boys are employing? Play Daunte Culpepper and Travis Taylor if you’re looking for a serviceable start.

The Bears have beat the Vikings four straight and in the battle of Midway, expect that to continue. I’ve said in this column that your money was well spent on both Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson because their average draft position was very low for their potential bang for your buck. As I’ve said, if you have the starting RB from the Bears that will go a long way to a championship run for you. Those with Thomas Jones I’m sure were very pleased. Well now, those with Cedric Benson will be equally as pleased. Usher in the age of Benson. Don’t get caught flat footed with Benson on your bench this week and if you can acquire him via trade, do it now. His value will never be lower.  It is not a good sign that Thomas Jones is seeking a second opinion on his knee.

Prediction: Bears 27 – Vikings 17

Washington Redskins at Kansas City Chiefs Sunday 1:00p

The Redskins have never won in Kansas City? Well there’s a stat to lay your hat on. I am staying away from this contest fantasy wise as neither team will produce a big fantasy producer. We should finally see Tony Gonzalez emerge and this is a good spot for him. Boy am I glad I stayed away from Priest Holmes this year in all my leagues, passing over him even when it looked silly to let him go.

Marc Brunell to Santana Moss is also a little interesting to me as they have had the rainbow connection lately. Watch TE Chris Cooley as he was a Progno fave early on in the preseason after his tremendous close to the 2004 campaign.

Prediction: Chiefs 24 – Redskins 14

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys Sunday 1:00p

Tough game, tough match-up but a heck of a football game. Unlike the aforementioned Redskins/Chiefs game which not only will be light on fantasy stats but light on action, the Giants and Cowboys will be a barn burner. Drew Bledsoe will be utilizing all of his targets and you really have to like the play of Terry Glenn.  You should expect that to continue. Wouldn’t it be something if the Belicheck led Patriots with Tom Brady and company were to face off against the Cowboys and the old Patriots, complete with Bill Parcells in the big dance? It would be like a warped game of Madden ‘05.

Look for both teams to go up top often with Eli Manning and Drew Bledsoe cranking it up. As mentioned in this column a few weeks ago, do not be surprised if Plaxico Burress turns into this years Andre Johnson. You could have had him for a song back then. Tiki Barber will get more in the air than on the ground this week but he is flexible that way.

If you’re a Julius Jones owner and were planning on starting him, I suggest you check the news closer to game time.

Prediction: Cowboys 28 – Giants 21

Carolina Panthers at Detroit Lions Sunday 1:00p

OK already, we get the Jake Delhomme to Steve Smith thing and I for one am tired of getting my behind handed to me as it seems I’m playing against Steve Smith every single week in some league. Please, make it stop. The interesting note for you waiver wire hounds and it’s a deep REM sleeper that may slip by some of the other hounds who are focusing on the Packers and Saints backup RB’s. Neither DeShaun Foster nor Stephen Davis have practiced for the Panthers this week and if neither don’t play or their knee injuries tend to linger as knee injuries do. Snatch up Nick Goings now as he had 4 100+ yard games for the Panthers last year before he petered out.

Even I, possibly the biggest Joey Harrington fan in the world, knows when it’s time to throw in the towel and I’m tossing it. No mas. The Lions are starting to play a little better like a team and that is helping them. Kevin Jones should be fine here but I wouldn’t rely on anyone else in this offense.

Prediction: Panthers 29 – Lions 28

Miami Dolphins at Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday 1:00p

This is not a great place to be digging for stats on Sunday. The Dolphins will be flat even with the return of Ricky Williams. I think we’ll see the Dolphins run him as they try desperately to turn themselves into a two headed running monster.

The Bucs are not going to have an easy time of it on the ground and you stay away from Carnell Williams and Michael Pittman no matter who might be playing. The only consistent hook up right now is to Joey Galloway and there is no reason to think that will not continue. What a turn around year for Galloway. Think quick! Who’s the star WR on the Bucs? Michael Clayton you say? Hmmm..

Prediction: Buccaneers 23 – Dolphins 20

Cincinnati Bengals at Tennessee Titans Sunday 1:00p

The Titans are just out classed and out gunned in this one as the Bengals rock and roll up top and on the ground. What an odd statement that would have been just a few short years ago. Expect solid days from all your Bengals, play ‘em if you got ‘em.

The Titans will keep up as they have more tricks in their bag than an Indian snake charmer but it will be a struggle to do so. Only look at your Titans for fantasy stats if you’re truly strapped somewhere else due to injuries or a bye week. In general, they’ll all be flat and won’t really help you.

The score is a little closer than the actual game.

Prediction: Bengals 27 – Titans 24

Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints Sunday 1:00p

You want Warrick Dunn in your lineup on Sunday, no questions asked. He’s about the only ‘lock’ of the weekend to produce. The other RB’s that will perform admirably aren’t your usual cast of characters and Dunn is the only guy we’ve seen at or near the rushing top for the week out of the bunch. If you’re interested, the other unlikely group of guys that are scheduled to impress are Cedric Benson, Jerome Bettis and Curtis Martin.

The answer to your Saints RB question is you should expect to see Antowain Smith in for 1st and 2nd down with Aaron Stecker the 3rd down back. Antowain Smith is the more valuable of the two and who you should be targeting in FA. Do not expect the ground game to gel immediately so look for the Saints to try and throw the ball. The jury is still out on whether Joe Horn will be in the lineup or in street clothes but either way, do not expect a big day from him or Donte Stallworth.

Prediction: Falcons 24 – Saints 19

Jacksonville Jaguars at Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday 1:00p

The Jaguars tend to play the Steelers tight and they will score their points with balance. They will run a little, pass a little, trick a little, try and get it done by keeping the Steelers on their heels. As a result, there will be nothing but normal numbers from your Jags.

The Steelers will have a different game plan. Run the ball down your throat till your head pops off and Jerome Bettis looks to be the benefactor. The days of Willie Parker are still here but the Steelers will want to use Parker as the change of pace back and not the other way around.

Prediction: Steelers 30 – Jaguars 20

Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens Sunday 1:00p

Yawn. Yes I know it’s the Art Modell Browns against the new Browns and all that nastiness that occurred years ago will be drudged through the mud again but at this point, I really don’t give a Ravens Brown rump. While most people will run screaming from this game, Trent Dilfer may actually do OK but the real surprise will come from the Ravens passing game. If you have been waiting to play Derrek Mason, this would be your chance.

Prediction: Browns 20 – Ravens 17

New York Jets at Buffalo Bills Sunday 4:15p

The tale of two QB’s. Kelly Holcomb vs. Vinnie Testaverde and years back, I would take Testaverde every time. Today? Things have changed. Look for a decent day from Curtis Martin as he tries to do it all.

The Bills will counter with a heavy dose of Willis McGahee as both teams primarily keep the ball on the carpet and play a little trench football. Martin and McGahee make nice starts here.

Prediction: Bills 24 – Jets 14

New England Patriots at Denver Broncos Sunday 4:15p

I know the Broncos homers will be calling me out on this but my track record picking Patriots and Broncos games this season has been solid. Just last week I was singing the virtues of the Broncos, stating that the books hadn’t caught up to them yet and there may be a couple weeks of good lines for the Broncos games ala the Chargers last year. Vegas won’t make that mistake twice again as they snapped this line right into place with the Broncos favored by a field goal.

The Patriots will be passing well as Tom Brady continues his torrid pace of statistic gathering. Corey Dillon is not in for a big day but he won’t stink either. The Patriots will look like the Patriots we all should be getting used to. Fantastic offense and a defense that let’s Donovan McNabb’s Mom through with a can of Chunky Soup.

The Broncos will be playing well as they first try Mike Anderson and if that doesn’t work, Tatum Bell. Anyone who plays the Patriots will have success on offense so stick all your Broncos into your lineup. The Patriots will even make Jake Plummer and Rod Smith look good and you should expect to see Rod Smith in the end zone.

Just about everyone else has been picking the Patriots to flop each week but we here at Progno central have been getting it right. You choose.

Prediction: Patriots 35 – Broncos 28

San Diego Chargers at Oakland Raiders Sunday 4:15p

The Chargers have been firing on all cylinders lately and opposing defenses should be concerned about the Charger offense. No big surprises in this one as the Chargers get it done up top with Eric Parker starting to attract a few more looks. That’s not to say that LaDainian Tomlinson will flop. Far from it.

The Raiders will challenge the Chargers and push their secondary most of the day. A solid day on tap for Kerry Collins, Randy Moss and even Jerry Porter has a shot at roping something decent in.

Prediction: Chargers 32 – Raiders 23

Houston Texans at Seattle Seahawks Sunday 8:30p

The Texans are still a team in transition and until they’ve shown that they have turned the corner, you sit on them. It may not seem like it but they are moving in the right direction fairly quickly. Domanick Davis is a weekly must start as the offense is shifting to him as the focal point and he has the opportunity to go big for you over the second half.

Matt Hasselbeck doesn’t appear to have lost a step with the receivers that are on the field for him. Joe Jurevicius and Jerramy Stevens have helped pick up the slack. Jurevicius will likely rotate back to his original role but for now, enjoy the mid-season stat filler.

The Seahawks are just too much offensively for the Texans to keep up with. Shaun Alexander from one end and Matt Hasselbeck from the other makes for a long day for the Texans defense.

Prediction: Seahawks 28 – Texans 13

St. Louis Rams at Indianapolis Colts Monday 9:00p

The reason why the Colts will win this great game is because of Edgerrin James. He is not going to carry his team on Monday night but rather, will be the difference maker. The Colts are favored by I think two TD’s but the Rams will make this a lot closer than that. Marc Bulger to Tory Holt will be alive and well, not to mention Shaun McDonald and a battery of similar receivers.  This is a test for the Colts Defense and they know it.  Watch the status of Dwight Freeney as he didn’t practice and without Freeney, the Colts D snaps back to ordinary very quickly.

Prediction: Colts 28 – Rams 23
