The Prognosticator – Week 7

Welcome my fantasy brethren to another edition of The Prognosticator. May it pay out like an epileptic slot machine. A busy week this week for ye’ ole’ Progno with some family in from Switzerland and Little Leage Baseball duties but still able to slap an offering together for ya’ll.  Speaking of ya’ll, the wife, kids and I have decided to do something nutty for Thanksgiving.  Head to Kentucky!  Who ever heard of leaving New England for Kentucky on Thanksgiving?  It’s part of our new Thanksgiving concept.  Visit and stay with friends that have moved away that we haven’t seen in a long time.  Last year we packed up the family vehicle and spent Thanksgiving in Virginia with some good friends, this year it’s Kentucky.  We move in for 5 days or so and make it a fun stay.

A quick word about the World Series and then we’re onto the games.  It shouldn’t be a secret that many of the guys affiliated with this site are Red Sox fans and being swept by the White Sox wasn’t fun.  We have last year to remember and the glow in Boston is unlike one I’ve ever seen.  2004 will last a long while and making the playoffs in 2005 really was good enough.  I expect this to be a very good World Series, one of the better one’s from a pure competitive baseball perspective.  Both teams have solid pitching and once again, pitching wins championships.  A lot of people for some reason are rooting against the Astros simply because of Roger Clemens?  Honestly, I don’t get that?  People don’t understand who Roger Clemens is.  Sure he can be a pompous ass but he’s Roger Clemens and I say that in a reverance sort of way.  Enjoy watching him pitch because he is arguably the best pitcher to ever take the mound in the history of the game and it is a game rich in history so that is no easy feat.  When you talk about the best strike out pitchers to ever play the game of baseball, it’s Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens.  You have to mention Sandy Koufax as his fast ball was lightning but when all is said and done, Ryan and Clemens sit on top of that peak as the two best strikeout pitchers ever.

Behind Cy Young, Clemens is as pure a winner as the game can produce and has more career wins than Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Tom Seaver or Bob Gibson.  With a 67% lifetime win percentage, TWO 20 strikeout games 10 years apart, a career 3.12 ERA and tops in the categories where he’s rubbing shoulders with Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, and Cy Young, you need to realize that Roger Clemens is on the same pedestal with the top pitchers to ever play the game.  You should enjoy watching him pitch in this World Series as it will be a story you can tell your grand children as Roger Clemens is truly a very special athlete that comes along only once a generation, and it may be a very long time before we see his equal.

Enjoy Week 7 as there are a bunch of good games on the card.

Bye Teams

Tampa Bay Buccaneers      Carolina Panthers

Jacksonville Jaguars       New England Patriots

Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings Sunday 1:00p

The Packers were running on high throttle and had a bye week to prepare for the Vikes. The Vikes are hoping there are no tapes of the cruise. I know I picked up the Packers D in some of my leagues last week in anticipation for this game, hopefully you did too.

The Packers keep it on the ground and run well against the Vikings. Ahman Green is expected to return but tuck this little pearl away as his name has yet to be uttered as a Running Back alternative for the Packers.  While everyone else is looking at Tony Fisher, the real guy to get is Reshard Lee.

Prediction: Packers 33 – Vikings 17

San Diego Chargers at Philadelphia Eagles Sunday 1:00p

The battle of the initials! This one is pretty simple as it comes down to LT vs. TO. This is going to be one heck of a football game and my personal favorite of the week. Both LT and TO will shine and both teams will play hard and well, but the Eagles edge the Chargers by a nose hair due to the extra man in the stands. This week, our Last Row guys win the game for the Eagles with opportune roars when the Chargers are on Offense and perhaps a spit ball or two at the Chargers punt and kick returners as they’re looking up for the ball.

Prediction: Eagles 31 – Chargers 30

San Francisco 49ers at Washington Redskins Sunday 1:00p

A cake walk for the Redskins with Marc Brunell lighting it up to Santana Moss most of the day. If you have either one, play them. The 49’ers will keep it a little closer than expected simply because even they know they have to run the ball or else they won’t have a QB to play next week. They will run a lot which will help them to control the clock, a little. The trade of Tim Rattay was a curious one as the 49’ers are saying that Alex Smith is their guy and if he gets killed, they’ll just have the punter toss the pill.  Strange.

Prediction: Redskins 24 – 49’ers 17

Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans Sunday 1:00p

Even I feel squeamish projecting anything less than 72 points for the Colts but I’m going to be the knucklehead and go conservative. Our friend Brett from last week gets a little freaky when I predict high scoring affairs. Both teams will want to keep it on the ground and will try to. Advantage Colts. Play Edgerrin James as he will excel and Domanick Davis is worth a start as he is involved even if the Texans are down by 72.

Prediction: Colts 28 – Texans 14

Detroit Lions at Cleveland Browns Sunday 1:00p

No real stars will come out of this contest but you should look at Kevin Jones and Trent Dilfer to Antonio Bryant as worthy starts on your team.  The rest I wouldn’t touch.

Prediction: Lions 27 – Browns 21

Kansas City Chiefs at Miami Dolphins Sunday 1:00p

This is a very odd game as both teams will have the same playbook coming in with the same goals. Both will want to run the ball well with their RB’s and they both will want to get the TE more involved. This is not the week to finally give up on Tony Gonzalez. I know you’re tempted but Gonzo ripped the Dolphins to shreds last year and I know a LOT of you will have him on your bench.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.  I really like double negatives.

Prediction: Chiefs 24 – Dolphins 20

New Orleans Saints at St. Louis Rams Sunday 1:00p

The Saints will be OK in this one. They’ll be able to run the ball OK and passing will be OK. Nothing stellar but your Saints make serviceable spot starts. Aaron Brooks, Donte Stallworth and even Az-Zahir Akhim and Antowain Smith all deserve long looks.

The Rams will be throwing the ball no matter who is at QB. If Tory Holt plays the throwing quotient goes up.  Some may find Isaac Bruce on their waiver wire, go ahead and check real quick, I’ll wait..

Prediction: Rams 27 – Saints 23

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals Sunday 1:00p

The Jaguars man handled the Steelers and the score wouldn’t have been that close if Antwaan Randle ‘El hadn’t run one back. Not having Ben Rothlisberger certainly didn’t help matters but it makes me think that the Steelers may not be as unbeatable as the NFL world once thought.  Just about everyone at WR for the Steelers sounds like they won’t be able to play and that will be a big problem, Big Ben or not.

Look for the Bengals to have a solid day on the ground with a little help from Chris Perry.  In case you’re wondering, Chad Johnson is good, very good.

Prediction: Bengals 28 – Steelers 23

Dallas Cowboys at Seattle Seahawks Sunday 4:05p

I’m not sure I like this “cardiac” label the Cowboys have but whatever, it doesn’t really matter what I like. The Cowboys are going to play well on the ground and excel in the air. Get Drew Bledsoe and Terry Glenn in your lineup and Keyshawn Johnson is worthy of a flex spot.

The Seahawks will own the ground game with Shaun Alexander and will also have some success up top but I think they spread it around a lot more to some no name receivers as they try to exploit match up problems in the Cowboys secondary. Another big day on tap for Shaun Alexander.  You may begin to shudder now if you are playing against him this week.

Prediction: Seahawks 30 – Cowboys 19

Tennessee Titans at Arizona Cardinals Sunday 4:15p

The Titans are certainly wobbling off center and are starting to spray old players on the wall but they occasionally still have a little fight in them. The Titans are on the down side of their franchise curve but a trademark of a team like the Titans is that every once and a while they put it together and put it together well as they still have talent, they just can’t bring it every week anymore. The loss of Drew Bennett certainly hurts but the Cardinals don’t have much film on the other guys so a lot of what the Titans show them on Sunday will be unprepared for and that is a big advantage.

The Cardinals will throw the ball a ton and this authors opinion is that you leave Josh/Luke/Steve/Lance or whatever else I’ve called him, McCown in there. Big day for Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin as usual, no matter who plays at QB.

Be forewarned however that while McCown is putting up solid fantasy starter numbers, he needs to show he can win before Dennis Green puts his entire faith into him and when they lose this one too, some will question whether McCown has what it takes to get a team over the hump.

Prediction: Titans 24 – Cardinals 21

Denver Broncos at New York Giants Sunday 4:15p

The Giants are favored in this? Really? The Broncos will run all day long and run well. Both Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell will have decent numbers. When things get stingy on the ground the Broncos will be able to make completions up top, in particular to Rod Smith.

Eli Manning makes a great start at home and you had better have some real top QB’s in your stable if you own Eli and aren’t starting him. Plaxico Burress and Jeremy Shockey also make strong starts.  A few of the Giants are questioning the play calling in the media and that is never a good sign.  Just be warned that it is something to keep a cautious eye on as players could be benched as Tom Coughlin is no sissy.

Prediction: Broncos 26 – Giants 22

Buffalo Bills at Oakland Raiders Sunday 4:15p

The Bills are a much better team now that they have a QB that knows which way is up, although the Raiders secondary is actually fairly good. Expect a down week for the Bills in the air but they will be able to move the chains effectively with Willis McGahee. It will be their running game that keeps them in this one.

The Moss-less Raiders will certainly miss him but Doug Gabriel makes a solid replacement. It is time for Jerry Porter to step up his game as he was thrown to a lot last week and didn’t catch many. It will be interesting to see what effect a weeks worth of preparation knowing he isn’t the guaranteed #2 will have. Raiders win a close one because they have better balance in the air and on the ground.

Prediction: Raiders 21 – Bills 20

Baltimore Ravens at Chicago Bears Sunday 4:15p

The Ravens offense blows chunks and the Bears can run the ball. Yes the Ravens are hard to run on and that will hamper the Bears progress but come now. I’m going to continue to say this because it’s fact. Has anyone on the Ravens coaching staff actually looked at Chester Taylor’s numbers and contrasted them with Jamal Lewis and then looked at the teams win-loss record? Anyone? I know my call for Chester Taylor has been dismissed as an idiotic statement even in our own forum here and that the Ravens would never play Taylor over Lewis. But to not try something different when you’re losing is just idiotic. This isn’t about running the rushing champion from a couple years back or making sure you keep your star RB happy. This entire game is based around winning and losing and doing whatever it takes to notch a win. That’s it.

Prediction: Bears 24 – Ravens 15

New York Jets at Atlanta Falcons Monday 9:00p

Like last week, Curtis Martin makes the list of strongly recommended runners and like last week, so does Warrick Dunn. Sit them at your own peril, especially Warrick Dunn with TJ Duckett hampered by injuries.  This will be a statement game for him and if you can weasle Dunn away from an unsuspecting owner, do it now.

Prediction: Falcons 31 – Jets 17
