I think we’ve started something here like the opposite of the SI Cover Jinx. It appears that whomever we vote out of the competition each week gets a jump start and begins to play well the following week. Two weeks ago it was Jake Plummer who was eliminated and he has had two solid fantasy weeks since.
This week we have eliminated Rich Gannon with 96% of the vote. Some of the comments include: “Gannon and the Raiders looked awful”, “Something is wrong in Oakland”, “Gannon cost me a win this week”, and my favorite “DIE, RAIDERS, DIE!”
Then Rich went out in week 4 and threw for 348 Yd and 3 TDs. Unfortunately for him it was too late and he is now added to the waiver wire. Drew Bledsoe was spared and will remain in the competition.
Was I the only one who got burned with the Peyton Manning/ Marvin Harrison hookup Sunday night? In one of my leagues I was looking to be in great shape for win number three. I had injury and bye week problems (Edgerrin James, Tiki Barber, and Koren Robinson all out of my lineup) but survived the 1PM and 4PM games and had a sizeable lead going into Sunday night. All I had to do was hang on with the Colts duo doing minimal damage and I’d be alright. Well Peyton went off and had a huge fantasy day with 314 Yds passing and 6 TDs (3 to Harrison). Needless to say, I got smoked and went on to lose big.
The other amazing performance of the past week was Gus Frerotte filling in for the injured Daunte Culpepper. Frerotte threw for 267 Yds and hooked up with Randy Moss for 3TDs. I bet he didn’t start for too many fantasy teams this week, but could be a good short term pickup if you have a bye week issue.
Here is the current status of the contestant pool:
Drew Bledsoe Tom Brady Drew Brees
Aaron Brooks Kerry Collins Daunte Culpepper
Rich Gannon Jeff Garcia
Trent Green Matt Hasselbeck Kelly Holcomb
Tommy Maddox Peyton Manning Donovan McNabb
Jake Plummer Kurt Warner
This week we have 3 nominated players for you to vote on:
Jeff Garcia (San Francisco) – The Niners offense is in complete disarray. Star WR Terrell Owens is upset because he isn’t getting the ball. There is discussion of benching Garcia for 4th year backup Tim Rattay. Jeff threw for only 108 Yds and no touchdowns against the Vikings for a truly horrible performance.
Kelly Holcomb (Cleveland) – Kelly did not play this week because of multiple injuries to his feet. Fortunately for him, backup Tim Couch did little to impress so when Kelly is able to play, he will get the starting job back.
Daunte Culpepper (Minnesota) – Daunte has an injured back but was dressed to play if he was needed this week. Fortunately for Vikings fans (and Daunte’s back) Gus Frerotte started off strong and the Vikings went on to a huge win. With a struggling Atlanta team up next and then the bye week, look for Culpepper to sit out until the October 19th matchup with the Denver Broncos.
Your vote will count, who will be added to the waiver wire this week? Who will be named the Ultimate Fantasy Quarterback!
