Waiver Wire Candidates – Week 5

Week 5, be afraid, be very afraid. If your team is not winning yet you could be in a lot of trouble down the stretch. I have noticed that some owners have been dropping good value to cover bye weeks with the latest one week wonder. You should pay as much attention to the people being dropped as the free agents out there. Here are some players we feel might be available and have a chance of helping your team. You won’t see Ricky Williams and Priest Holmes on the list because we expect them to be taken in your league. Ok, you won’t see THE Ricky Williams on this list, but Ricky II (IND) is listed.

Quarterbacks

Gus Frerotte MIN – With last week’s performance, he will start week 5 and give Dante 2 more weeks off (bye week is 6). If you need someone for just next week, he could be your man.

David Carr HOU – Steady. Very Steady. Sort of like an up and coming Jay Fiedler.

Tim Couch CLE – Keep an eye on Holcombe, if fully healthy he will start next week.

Runningbacks

Rudi Johnson/Brandon Bennett CIN – Dillon might rest this week. I think Rudi will get the bulk of the work, but we shall see.

Ricky Williams/Dominick Rhodes IND – see above, but insert James in place of Dillon and Ricky in place of Rudi. Neither have much value the next 2 weeks against TB and CAR.

Michael Bennett MIN – Should be playing by November, so you Moe Williams and Onterrio Smith owners should begin thinking about him.

Wide Receivers

Bobby Shaw BUF – With Josh Reed’s bruised back, I look for Bobby to take over the #2 spot in Buffalo.

Tim Brown OAK – Had a big week against SD, not sure what the future holds for this 37 year old. Porter’s return will help.

Jerry Porter OAK – He is hoping to play against Chicago this weekend. I guess he saw the GB/CHI Monday night game also.

Justin McCareins TEN – 2 TD the last 2 weeks. Could be a good option in deep leagues.

Dana Looker STL – Seems like the #3 WR in STL is worth something in very deep leagues. He has bounced around the league for a while, he might land in STL permanently.

Nate Burleson MIN – Can he be the #2 guy behind Moss in Minn? Perhaps. I need one more good week to be sure.

Tight Ends

Ernie Conwell NOS – He is getting good looks from Brooks this week.

Erron Kinney TEN – You can’t spell TENN without TE, should become the main TE target.

Kickers

John Hall WAS – I still see him available in many leagues. He should not be available in yours unless you already have a top kicker.

Seth Marler JAC – 6-10 in field goals in the first 4 weeks. Not a bad number of attempts.

Defenses

Giants NYG – Ok, truth be told, I didn’t find a single Def that was probably available and worth a roster spot. This was the best I could do, and I don’t recommend them that highly.
