Home / Commentary / WALLY’S WORLD: Week 7

As we pack up the Wagon Queen Family Truckster for another trip down that fantasy road, Old Uncle Waldo must share a personal story.

I have the pleasure of watching my step-daughter be a cheerleader at her middle school football games. The team she happens to cheer for has 13 players…total. Yes. That is a lot of two-way playing for these youngsters. It was like watching the middle football version of “Hoosiers.” Except they didn’t win the game…or score at all.

That being said, it’s great to just watch football and not look at it from a ‘fantasy football angle.’

Although a couple of those kids looked pretty good…dammit…stop it!

The Philadelphia Eagles have come crashing back to earth and suddenly the Carson Wentz bandwagon seems to be losing momentum. The kid will be a good QB in the future but most rookies go through these highs and lows. [Editor’s Comment: I betchya the Philly brass still feels a lot better about Wentz than the Rams brass feels about Goff.]

Let’s not forget that Ryan Leaf was 2-0 in his first two starts. I’m just saying. [Editor’s Comment: Oh, Uncle Waldo, I can’t believe that you went there.]

It was nice to see the Chargers win a game after so many heartbreaking losses.

Was it a fun game to watch? No.

Well, I guess if you like to watch kickers it was OK.

Thursday night football…ugh.

It’s time to realize that the TE we want from the San Diego Chargers is Hunter Henry. With Antonio Gates looking every bit of 36 years old the torch has officially been passed. [Editor’s Comment: It’s hard to believe that Henry lasted until pick 3.11 in one of my dynasty experts leagues. Unfortunately, I was picking at 3.12.]

It’s also looking more and more like Devontae Booker is going to supplant C.J. Anderson as the lead RB in Denver.

Anderson did have some long runs called back (including a TD) due to penalties and that may help him hold the lead role but the ‘Old Uncle Waldo’ eye test says Booker is coming on strong over the last couple of weeks. The clock is ticking. [Editor’s Comment: Is that ‘Old Uncle Waldo’ eye test with our without your bifocals.]

IDP owners that plucked Chargers LB Jatavis Brown off the waiver wire a couple weeks back are grinning like the butcher’s dog. That is if they actually started him this week. [Editor’s Comment: Yes, I did.]

First John Kuhn sharks three scores for the Saints and this week TE Coby Fleener runs in a score. I’m sensing an anti-Mark Ingram conspiracy in the ‘Big Easy.’ [Editor’s Comment: You ain’t the only one sensing a conspiracy this time of year.]

Only the banged up Detroit Lions defense could make the Rams offense look like a viable fantasy unit. Another week and another TD reception for a TE against Detroit. You are welcome Lance Kendricks. [Editor’s Comment: I’m fully aware of the adage regarding rookie TEs, but when is Tyler Higbee going to start to figure into the Rams offense?]

I can’t lie. The Lions won again and I love it! [Editor’s Comment: And I couldn’t be happier that the Bears are one loss closer to 1-15. It’s time to start looking towards the draft in Chicago.]

Don’t look now folks but we had a big time Kendall Wright sighting in Tennessee. [Editor’s Comment: Don’t chase this week’s stat line.]

Not to be outdone, Golden Tate also reemerged from the fantasy ashes with a huge week for the Lions (did I mention that the Lions won this week?).

All is right in the fantasy football world as the Tom Brady to Rob Gronkowski show is back on track. This game is the reason folks took ‘Gronk’ in the back half of the first round in fantasy drafts. [Editor’s Comment: Still not a good idea.]

Hey there Colin Kaepernick! Not a bad debut at all. The pass to Torrey Smith may not have been a masterpiece but then again all TDs count. We like the 66 rushing yards as well from Kaepernick and he could be a sneaky good streaming start next week against a shaky Tampa Bay defense. [Editor’s Comment: Hmmm, I’ll sit that one out.]

Of course, the 49ers got blown off the field on a day that LeSean ‘Shady’ McCoy ran wild. [Editor’s Comment: Looks like Shady was out to prove a point.]

The 49ers have a nice duo of DEs in former Oregon teammates DeForest  Buckner and Arik Armstead. The youngsters combined for nine solo tackles and three sacks this week. IDP owners need to snatch them up if they happen to still be available on the waiver wire. This defense is on the field a lot.

On a side note. Always start your RBs against San Francisco. You are welcome.
