Whale Shark Interview – Mrktti

Congrats Mrktti on becoming another of our our Whale Sharks, 1000 messages on the Msg Boards!!
Thanks Rob! It took a little longer than some of the others, but I got here just the same!

So, tell us a little about yourself.
Let’s see, I’m a 39 year old military guy with a wife and two kids (8 and 2 years old). Born and raised in North Dakota, but well traveled. In the summer months you’ll most likely find me on the links or at the in-laws farm working cattle, baleing hay, or what ever. My kids activities take up a lot of my time and they like hangin’ with me, which is great because I figure they won’t think dad is so cool too many years from now. Besides work and Fantasy Football, I’m also enrolled in a MSMS (Master of Science in Health Services) Degree program in disaster prepardness and emergency management. I like long walks on the beach, watching sunsets…….

Ok…ok..enough!! I’m definitely not looking for a date! :) And what does Mrktti stand for?
It’s the first letter of my name, my wife’s name, my two boys’ names, and the first two letters of my last name. Not alot of thought put into that, really!

What about that quote of yours, “From the “For What It’s Worth” department”. Great quote for a msg board.
That came to me right away. It seemed to me that when I responeded to a question, the poster should just take it “For what it’s worth” – – It’s an opinion, and only one man’s at that!

So, you live in Somewhere North Dakota. Viking’s fan I would guess..but I could be wrong.
Reign in the horses there Rob! Can’t stand the Vikings or the Packers! I guess that’s because everyone in this area are fans of those two teams. I’ve always liked to be an individual so those two teams were an automatic no go. As were the Cowboys. Any team that has the audacity to call themselves “Americas Team” lost my vote.

Ok…so which is it then?
I’ve always been a Miami fan first. Then I adopted Tampa Bay when they came in the league…I’ve always had a soft spot for the underdog!

Ah…gotta love those old Orange Uni’s. And your thoughts on the Dolphins team so far?
Disappointing! I really thought they had put it all together this year. But, Fiedler hasn’t been consistant throwing, the defense hasn’t played up to their potential, the offensive line is too small, and they need another high caliber receiver.

Well who’s you favorite NFL Player, past and present then?
Joe Montana and Dan Marino! What a couple of exciting players to watch. The thing I loved the most about those two guys was that their teams were never out it when the ball was in their hands. I mean, when they were down by 7 to 10 points in the last two minutes of a game, you really believed they could pull it out, and many times they did!

Present day players I like to watch are Seau and Ricky Williams (and I liked them both before they were with the Fins).

How about a Super Bowl prediction from you.
Well, I guess my preseason pick of Miami and Seattle can still statistically happen, but I don’t think so. Let’s go with New England and St. Louis with the Patriots taking it.

Nice!! I wish! So how long have you been participating in Fantasy Football?
This is only my second year. A cousin in Florida got me into a Yahoo league along with my brother and a bunch of my cousins friends. As a Fantasy Virgin I eneded up in 5th out of that 12 team league.

Ahh…another member of the Tim Davoll Fantasy Virgin cult. Oh..wait that’s not what you meant. Ok..back to the interview. And how many leagues are you involved in?
This year I participated in 4 leagues including the Fantasy Sharks Blue Shark league.

And the Team Name(s). Any meaning behind them?
Dakota Juggernaut, Head Bangers, Da Man….. No Freudian meanings in any of them.

So, did you make your FFL playoffs this year?
The only league I didn’t make the playoffs was the Fantasy Shark League. And that is where I made my biggest bonehead move too. You may recall it Rob! Week 4, you and I are playing head to head, I inadvertently dropped my only available defense in a wire transaction, you won the match-up! Just so you know Rob, had I not pulled that move, I would of won and would have had sole possesion of 2nd in our division at years end. I hope that doesn’t hurt my chances of getting in again next year! What a great experience that league was though!

In my other leagues I’m playing for the championship in two of them and for 7th and 8th in the other.

I’m sure it won’t. I do remember that being strange. So ,what about your best and worst pick of the year?
My worst pick was undoubtedly Terry Kirby in the 9th. Tampa Bay cut him before the season even started.

My best is either Chris Cahmbers in the 7th or Steve McNair in the 11th. Or is it getting Duce McAllister in three of my four leagues?

Great. Let’s talk about FantasySharks.com a bit. So, as one of our eldest members, you must have seen a ton of changes to the site in two years. So, how are we doing? Are things getting better?
With out a doubt! That’s not saying anything bad about the begining. The site was terriffic last year, but you have added so much since I joined last September. What has really impressed me was how willing this site has been to implement the ideas of the members. Little things, like bolding users names in the results of the contests to the not so little things like the Sharks Leagues this year.

What has impressed me the most however, is how respectful the membership is. I have been to sites where name calling, foul language, and stuff not remotely related to fantasy football is prevalent all over the boards, we don’t have that here, and it’s nice! It seems the members do a good job of policing themselves. The best part of Fantasy Sharks has been, and I hope always will be, is that it’s free! So, thank-you Fantasy Sharks!

And how did you come to find us?
That was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away! Wow, I’m not sure, but I’m thinking it was google. Last year was my first for Fantasy Football and I was scrambling all over for info. I found Fantasy Sharks and the whole thing just felt “comfortable”. I think that’s because it was a new site so there weren’t mega posters here yet. Going to a messages board with guys on it with 1000’s of posts is intimidating for newbies.

How about your favorite FantasySharks feature or article?
Under the Microscope, The Observation Deck, the Whale Shark interviews, and I liked Doug’s Thinking Outloud articles!

So it seems that there’s a big push for playoff answers in the msg boards lately.
Well, isn’t that what fantasy football is all about! Winning the big one, or at least not taking last? That thing is really humming!

Is there anyone you want to point out that you respect the most?
I respect a lot of the posters opnions in the tank. Altough I do feel nostalgic when I see pcfountain, abelcl, hemol and DynastyForce around. The guys that were the most active last year.

Great. Last question. Still going to be with us at 2000 posts?
I hope so, but I’m sure it won’t be until ’04!

Thanks again for being such an active poster on the message boards! And congratulations on becoming a Whale Shark!!
Well, I would like to thank Tony and the Fantasy Sharks staff for providing such a great venue for this pastime!
