Whale Shark Interview – Tiptonhr

Congrats Tiptonhr on becoming another of our our Whale Sharks, 1000 posts on the Msg Boards!!
Thank you very much, Rob. I really turned it on there at the end, but I have always tried to only post when I actually had something to say – I guess I’ve just had more to say lately.

So, tell us a little about yourself.
Well, as you can tell by my avatar, I am a big Tennessee fan. I was born and raised and now live in Knoxville. For undergrad I went to Florida State, but I will always be a Vol fan first and foremost. The Noles, being my alma mater, are my second favorite team of course. I went to UT for law school, so I can proudly call myself a Vol first and a Nole second. Luckily they don’t cross paths too often and have a common enemy (Florida). What else about me is notable? Let’s see… I have a beautiful wife and baby daughter – she turned ten months old today. And I practice law here in Knoxville. That’s why you’ll rarely see me post between 9 am and about 6 pm… finally, I am a big music fan – I may love music even more than sports.

And what does Tiptonhr stand for?
That is the first part of the e-mail address they gave me in law school and I just started using it as my username for all things online – it makes it easier to just have one name with a few different passwords on different sites…

So, living in Rocky Top Tennessee, I’m pretty sure its a safe assumption that you’re a Titans fan. But, which comes first, the Titans or the Volunteers?
You would think it’s a safe assumption, but you’d be wrong. I’m not really a Titans fan at all. So the Vols obviously come first.

Well must have a thoughts on the Titans season so far though?
To be perfectly honest with you, I really disliked the Titans when they first came to my fair state. It has been only recently that I warmed up to them a little bit. But I love McNair and I think Fisher is a great coach. They used to run a really boring offense that was painful to watch, and of course we had to have them on television EVERY weekend around here, but lately they have opened up the offense a bit and I don’t mind having to see them so often. But as I said, I don’t really root for the Titans. If I had to choose a team to root for, I guess it would be the Colts because of Peyton.

Well who’s you favorite NFL Player, past and present then?
Past? Earl Campbell – he was my hero growing up. I was a big Oilers fan as a kid (which makes it even weirder that I disliked the Titans – it must have something to do with those goofy roller-derby uniforms with the cheesy “space-age” numerals. Plus I can’t stand Bud Adams or Eddie George…) Presently, it’s Peyton Manning.

How about a Super Bowl prediction from you.
It’s funny how everyone has talked all year long about how the AFC was by far the stronger conference and how there weren’t any good teams in the NFC and now here at the end of the year I think two of the best teams in the league are Philly and St. Louis… the Pats are playing well right now too. In the NFL playoffs it all comes down to who is hot and who is playing good defense and two who fit that bill right now are the Pats and Rams (beating the Chiefs or Colts and Eagles in the conference championships). I pick the Rams over the Pats in a revenge game from a couple of years ago.

So how long have you been participating in Fantasy Football?
This is my 4th year of playing FF.

And how many leagues are you involved in?
I am really only “involved” in one league. I put involved in quotes because I also played in a free Yahoo league this year, but I didn’t pay a lot of attention to it other than changing starters. Of course, naturally the team I didn’t pay any attention to is the only one still alive.

And the Team Name(s). Any meaning behind them?
My REAL team is (and has been since year one) the Rolling Bears. The name comes from a skit from the State (an old comedy sketch show on MTV when I was in college.) The name of my team in the free Yahoo league is the Red Mosquitos (from a Pearl Jam song).

So, did you make your FFL playoffs this year?
Yes, in both leagues. In my REAL league, I came in 3rd. My free Yahoo team is still alive, playing in the Super Bowl next week. Whoopee. Can you tell I’m excited?

Just barely! So ,what about your best and worst pick of the year?
My league just started using an auction format this year and I have to recommend that to everyone reading this. It makes drafts so much more fun and adds a lot of strategy to the process. On top of that, every owner has access to every player – you just have to be willing to pay for him. In a normal “serpentine draft”, the guy picking 12th would have no chance at Priest Holmes. In an auction draft, everybody has a chance at Holmes.

I’ll step off my auction soapbox now – That being said, my best pick this year was probably Priest Holmes ($65). I paid for him of course, but got him cheaper than LT2, Deuce, and Ricky Williams and the same price as Alexander. I was a little nervous about the hip, but it all turned out pretty well and I may even keep him next year (we inflate salaries 10%, so he’ll be $72, but he certainly earned that this year…) Culpepper was also a pretty good pick at $36, cheaper than Manning, McNabb, Garcia, Gannon, and Brooks.

My worst pick? I drafted pretty well, so none of them were TERRIBLE, but I regret paying $11 for Koren Robinson. “K-Rob” will never be a Rolling Bear again, even if he’s $1 next year. What a dud.

Indeed. Let’s talk about FantasySharks.com a bit. So, how did you come to find us?
I actually found the site through a link on the www.fantasysportscentral.com website.

Interesting…And how about your favorite FantasySharks feature or article?
My favorite feature is obviously the message boards. The Main Tank is the best online community I’ve ever been a part of.

So how goes the Message Boards lately?
I think it has been great – the playoffs have really ramped up the intensity.

Is there anyone you want to point out that you respect the most?
I try to respect everyone equally, from MattheuOfVa down to first-time Chum posters. The mutual respect on this board is what makes it such a great community. But I have really enjoyed getting to know some of you – I don’t want to name any names at the risk of forgetting someone, but everybody adds to this great site.

Great. Last question. Still going to be with us at 2000 posts?
As long as it’s free… How else will I keep up with HurricaneNamedDitka’s Madden trades?

Thanks again for being such an active poster on the message boards! And congratulations on becoming a Whale Shark!!
