Whale Shark Interview – ZaphodBeeblebrox

Congrats ZaphodBeeblebrox on becoming a Whale Shark (1000 messages) on the Message Boards!! A belated congrats is better than no congrats at all, right?

It took me about 6 months to make it there, so waiting a few weeks is not a big deal. This actually extends it since someone noticed and set up a thread of Congrats a few days after I crossed the “threshold”.

6 months is fairly quick, not by the standards of Viper and Stuntman, but quick none-the-less. So tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from? How old are you? What’s a typical day for you like? I was born 38 years ago in Philadelphia (Go Eagles!). My first memory… (deleted for length and boredom). Bounced around as my Dad got promoted through places such as Cincinnati (Go Bengals!), Pittsburgh (I actually hate the Steelers – Bengal’s AFC central rival) and Houston (Never liked them either for the same reason). I went to Texas A&M and then University of Texas (Austin) where I got a degree in Mgmt Info Systems. I live in Austin with a wonderful wife, Cynthia, of just over a year and a stepson named Adam whose 17. Currently I work for the Texas Department of Insurance as an Information Systems Examiner. Enjoy playing rugby and participating in Triathlons. Like to camp when the weather cools. Used to have several lizards for pets, but now I just collect artistic renditions of lizards from around the world.

Typical Day – Get up at 4 -4:30 am. Exercise for an hour before I get ready for work. Get to work about 7:30 to 8am. Go home 4:30 to 5pm. Fix dinner, watch TV, read, and peruse Fantasysharks when I can. Hit the sack about 10:30 – 11. Repeat as necessary. Not terribly interesting – but it works for me.

Wow, an athletic, brainiac, lizard collector. That’s pretty interesting. So do Cynthia and Adam share your love of fantasy football? Adam has some interest, but my wife hates football. I have to watch the games with no sound while she watches another show. Which is not so bad considering some of the announcers out there. Found out that I really don’t miss much by missing the talking heads in the booth at most games.

I feel your pain. I’m sure everyone, myself included, is wondering about your unique screen name. How’d you come up with it and does it have a meaning? Zaphod Beeblebrox is a character from Douglas Adam’s 5-book trilogy Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. He’s the Ex-President of the Imperial Galactic Government. He’s the type of guy who likes to do the unpredictable has 2 heads and likes to drink. This was the type of persona that I wanted to project, a bit unpredictable or occasionally drunk. And I thought the extra head might help me compete with the other sharks here in the tank.

A two headed unpredictable drunk? Sounds like a couple of my relatives. So are you also into Science Fiction? Science Fiction /Fantasy. I like to read escapist books. Especially after reading insurance- related material all week.

Great. So, how long have you been participating in Fantasy Football? And how many leagues are you involved in?

This is only my second year of FF. Last year I was in 2 leagues, finishing first in one and last in the other. This year I’m in too many leagues (at least for the time I can put into it). Actually this year I’m in 4 leagues. The Komodo Dragon names refer to a big, bad-ass lizard who can chase down a deer and will eat their young if the opportunity arises. The Vicodin Vanquishers refers to some experiences with the drug due to rugby related injuries.

Team Name(s)

Komodo Dragons – Mack’s FFL (private 2 keeper money league)

Komodo Dragons – New Legends FFL (Defending champion of this Antsports trophy league)

Zaphod Beeblebrox – Fantasysharks Indian Hammerhead League

Vicodin Vanquishers – Not Uber/Guber League

I know part of the reason for delaying the interview was that you didn’t want to pre-expose anyone to your draft strategy. Now that drafts are over, the season is in full swing, how did your strategies work out? Were you able to stick to them? Pretty much. I waited too long to grab my QB in the NUG and got stuck with Garcia, thank God Carr is having a stud like season so far. I went WR/WR in my FS league and picked up Staley (3rd) and Barber (4th). So far I’m 2 and 3 but I have the 2nd highest PF in the league. I think I drafted well in all my leagues, but have been let down so far with Portis (2 leagues) and Taylor (2 leagues).

I know you did well in the NUG league. I haven’t checked your others yet. So, what do you think your best and worst pick of the year was? Isaac Bruce at 5.01 (2 keeper league) and Tiki Barber at 3.01 (same 2 keeper league) are my favorites so far. Worst – Jeff Garcia – waited too long for a QB in the Not Uber/Guber league, he has been a huge bust so far.

So lets move on to some NFL questions. How about, who’s your favorite NFL team? My favorite is the Philadelphia Eagles. Grew up rooting for them and I can’t stop. It’s actually more fun rooting for them down here in Cowboy country!!!! My other favorite has to be the Cincinnati Bengals. A little tough some time, but hope springs eternal. I hold on to the fact that they pushed the 49ers in 2 very competitive Super Bowls during the Niners dynasty in the 80’s.

And your favorite NFL Player, past or present, is? My favorites are all old Eagles, Chuck Bednarik (one of the last guys to play both ways, full time), Bill Bergey, and William Montgomery (in addition his last name is my middle name).

Any one particular player or team surprised you this year? Team: Falcons, I expected them to be in shootouts all year long with Vick running and throwing the rock. But they are winning with a stingy D also. Player: Isaac Bruce, I picked him up in 2 of my 4 leagues. Both times I picked him up expecting WR3 numbers and he’s produced as my WR1’s should be.

Speed rounds have become popular interview tools by Stankweasels and others. What do you say we give it a shot with a quick 10-question speed round. Keep your answers as short as possible. Ready? Let’s go!

Coke or Pepsi? Coke.

Star Wars or Star Trek? Star Wars.

If a Gila Monster and a Komodo Dragon were to fight, who would win? Komodo Dragon easily!!!!

If a Komodo Dragon were to fight Mike Tyson, who would win? Komodo Dragon’s bite is more infectious, barely.

If you were a contestant on Survivor, what would your luxury item be? Rugby Ball.

Past or present, the person you would most like to meet is? Leonardo Da Vinci.

Besides your own, your favorite Fantasy Shark avatar is? So, many – CBSux.

What two teams are going to the Super Bowl? Eagles, New England.

Who’s going to win? Eagles!

The person who should have won the Ultimate Hottie Draft is? I think Alyssa Milano is deserving of the Ultimate Hottie title, but since your looking for someone else, I’ll say Eliza Dishku.

Great, some good answers there.

How about some questions about FantasySharks. So, about when did you first find us and how? Through the Fantasysharks Lineup Coach used in my league on

And now how often do you log on to Used to be once in the morning before work, during breaks and lunch at work and maybe once at home in the evening. Now my employer has started using Surf Control, so this site has been banned due to the “gambling connections”. So my time is now limited to twice a day.

How about your favorite FantasySharks feature or article? There’s so much. 1) The lineup coach, I only go against its advice at my peril. 2) The weekly projections 3) The Prognosticator. And of course, the message forums are always invaluable when you can’t decide who to start, make a trade, etc.

Since you’re such avid fan, I’m sure you have met some very interesting people on this site. Anyone in particular you want to give a shout out too? Trilogy – fellow Eagles fanatic Eagles going all the way this Year!!!! CBsux (or whatever he’s changing his name to), who let me build the consolation bracket for the Ultimate Hottie Tournament and invited me into the Not Uber/Guber League. Stankweasels 3000, a fellow Austinite. And you, TT, thanks for doing this interview; I was actually wondering who would step up.

Well I’m glad to do it, and thanks for the Hottie Consolation Bracket. Maybe we can convince the powers-that-be into making the Ultimate Hottie Draft a permanent off season feature. What do you think? Works for me. 😉 Gotta hide it from the wife though.

Anything else you like to say to all your fans out there? I’d like to think of myself as a low profile Whale Shark, not causing too many waves. Always lurking, waiting to spring upon some unsuspecting chum (or krill for the whale shark). So I’ll be watching and waiting.

Great. Last question. So, who’s going to win in the NUG league?

Definitely not me – Holt’s in the tank, Heap is hurt, Portis isn’t the same in WAS as DEN. (Hopefully next year’s draft order is based on reverse order this year’s results so I can get my hands on an Uber-stud! Hmmm?) Right now I think Nutty and Oilers Nut have the best squads. And of course your team is right up there. Dark Horse is Trilogy’s Team Rare Air. And who changed the schedule at the last minute????? The original schedule I saw had me playing Trilogy in WK1 and JBG in WK3 – I would of won both of those games. But NO!!! – switch up the schedule and I’m 0-4 staring 0-5 in the face as I take on another undefeated team. My opponent’s record so far is 19-1. ARRRGGGGHHH!!!!!

Thanks again for being such an active poster on the message boards! And congratulations!!
