Which Super Bowl Season Played to the Best Music?

With Super Bowl XLIII now in the books, The Corner of Knowledge thought it would be fun to take a look at the music that was during the past 43 Super Bowls. Joe Donato, our resident music expert, was kind enough to rank the top three music years during the Super Bowl era.  He could have ranked more than three years, but given what I paid him, nothing, he decided that he only had time for three.

So, as a supplement to Joe’s top three, I’ve ranked my top and bottom four years. The reasons I used for my rankings were not as technically sound as Joe’s, but then again, when have I ever written anything that has been technically sound?

JOE’S TOP 3

1) Super Bowl III

January 12, 1969

New York

Jets 16

Baltimore Colts 7

1968

1. I Heard It Through The Grapevine – Marvin Gaye

2. Hey Jude – Beatles

3. All Along The Watchtower – Jimi Hendrix

4. Dock Of The Bay – Otis Redding

5. Mony Mony – Tommy James & the Shondells

6. Jumpin’ Jack Flash – Rolling Stones

7. Born To Be Wild – Steppenwolf

8. White Room – Cream

9. Sympathy For The Devil – Rolling Stones

10. Revolution – Beatles

The Summer of Love in 1967 gave way to the turbulence of 1968. A nation was divided on

Vietnam, and two respected leaders were assassinated, MLK and JFK. The music reflected this turmoil and doom. Hendrix’s version of Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower” sounds ominous. The Stones’ “Sympathy For the Devil” still sends shivers down your spine 40 years after it happened. “Born to Be Wild” suggests that the rules of society are meaningless. It’s all about anarchy and overthrow, or in the case of the Beatles’ “Revolution”, some reluctance too. With that the football world would be turned upside down. The upstart AFL was still looked down upon. Here were the New York Jets, a heavy underdog to the NFL’s Baltimore Colts. The Colts were already part of the first Big Bang to pro football’s massive popularity a decade earlier, when they beat the other

New York team, the Giants, in the 1958 NFL Championship in OT aka “The Greatest Game Ever Played.” Yet in January of 1969, a young and cocky QB nicknamed Joe Willie “guaranteed” a victory for the Jets and the AFL in

Miami. The Jets’ 16-7 victory over a Colts team was the revolution in pro football. The AFL can play with the NFL and it hastened the merger with both leagues and the Super Bowl becoming the greatest spectacle in all of sports.

2) Super Bowl I

January 15, 1967

Green Bay

Packers 35

Kansas City Chiefs 10

1966

1. Good Vibrations – Beach Boys

2. When A Man Loves A Woman – Percy Sledge

3. Reach Out, I’ll Be There – Four Tops

4. Gimme Some Lovin’ – Spencer Davis Group

5. Ain’t Too Proud To Beg – Temptations

6. Eight Miles High – Byrds

7. For What It’s Worth –

Buffalo

Springfield

8. Paint It Black – Rolling Stones

9. You Keep Me Hangin’ On – Supremes

10. Wild Thing – Troggs

1966 was the greatest year in rock and popular music, though at the time no one knew that.  The first Super Bowl (it was not even called that, it was simply the NFL-AFL Championship Game) didn’t have much fanfare. In fact the LA Coliseum was only half-filled. But it was this game that laid the groundwork to the massive success and progress of pro football, just as the musical artist of 1966 laid the groundwork to the great potential of what rock and pop music can be. It was as if all of the garage bands had overnight became studio wizards, producing sophisticated works of art. “Good Vibrations” took months to record, but Brian Wilson had a vision for his band, the Beach Boys, leading to their masterpiece “Pet Sounds.” The Beatles came out with “Revolver”, continually credited with being the greatest rock album of all time. The studio trickery done on this album led to “Sgt. Pepper” the next year. The Byrds and Stones where taking their three chord songs and adding elements of psychedelic coloring. Just as these bands are giants in the history of music, the NFL and AFL in the 1960’s had their own, Lombardi, Halas, Landry, Stram as coaches, Butkus, Sayers, Starr (Bart, not Ringo), Nitscke, and Namath. The first Super Bowl was a one-sided affair as Lombardi’s Packers took care of Stram’s Chiefs. Other Super Bowls were better, just as other rock albums in later years were thought to be better, but it all began in 1966.

3) Super Bowl X

January 18, 1976

Dallas

Cowboys 17

Pittsburgh Steelers 21

1975

1. Born to Run – Bruce Springsteen

2. Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen

3. Walk This Way – Aerosmith

4.

Kashmir – Led Zeppelin

5. Tangled Up in Blue – Bob Dylan

6. Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd

7. Thunder Road – Bruce Springsteen

8. One of These Nights – Eagles

9. Low Rider – War

10. I’m Not in Love – 10cc

Just looking at the top songs of 1975 and you see musicians who are heavyweights to this day, just as the two franchises that met for the first time in a Super Bowl are considered now, the Cowboys and Steelers. The Cowboys have been there eight times, the Steelers seven. The Cowboys have five wins with the Steelers adding a sixth with Sunday’s win over the Cardinals. The RIAA has since established the diamond award for album sales of 10 million or more. The Eagles, Springsteen, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, and Aerosmith have all had albums (sometimes more than one) that have reached that mark. By the time the Super Bowl was in its 10th game, this game was consistently the top-watched event on television. The Super Bowl had transcended sports and was now a fabric of our pop culture, just as these bands have transcended time (every new generation is discovering these bands). By the way, Super Bowl X was a great game too.

MY TOP FOUR(In no particular order)

1) SUPER BOWL V

January 17, 1971

Baltimore

Colts 16

Dallas Cowboys 13

1970

1. Layla – Derek and the Dominos

2. Bridge Over Troubled Water – Simon and Garfunkel

3. Let It Be – The Beatles

4. Your Song – Elton John

5. Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine – James Brown

6. Lola – The Kinks

7. Who’ll Stop the Rain – Creedence Clearwater Revival

8. Fire and Rain – James Taylor

9. Paranoid – Black Sabbath

10. All Right Now – Free

The music from 1970 gets a top five ranking based solely on the Beatles’ “Let It Be.” As you will see below, this selection exposes the inexplicable duality of man, but I digress. “Let It Be” reaches in and touches my soul, it brings peace no matter what the situation and even the occasional tear. I wish that Sir Paul would have shaven prior to this

video, but now I’m just nitpicking.

2) SUPER BOWL XI

January 9, 1977

Oakland

Raiders 32

Minnesota Vikings 14

1976

1. Hotel California – The Eagles

2. Go Your Own Way – Fleetwood Mac

3. More Than a Feeling –

Boston

4. Anarchy in the

UK – The Sex Pistols

5. Dancing Queen – Abba

6. (Don’t Fear) The Reaper – Blue Oyster Cult

7. Night Moves – Bob Seger

8. Blitzkrieg Bop – The Ramones

9. The Boys Are Back in Town – Thin Lizzy

10. Play That Funky Music – Wild Cherry

Boston

provides classic guitar rock-n-roll and you just can’t help but sing out loud to “More Than a Feeling”. The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and Bob Seger laid the groundwork for a solid Top 10. But, I’m willing to bet that no other song gave birth to a skit as funny as this

one.

3) SUPER BOWL XX

January 26, 1986

Chicago

Bears 46

New England Patriots 10

1985

1. We Are the World –

U.S.A. for

Africa

2. Saving All My Love For You – Whitney Houston

3. That’s What Friends Are For – Dionne Warwick (& Friends)

4. Addicted To Love – Robert Palmer

5. Everybody Wants To Rule the World – Tears For Fears

6. Walk Like An Egyptian – Bangles

7. Money For Nothing – Dire Straits

8. Greatest Love of All – Whitney Houston

9. Freeway of Love – Aretha

Franklin

10. The Power of Love – Huey Lewis & The News

“We Are the World,” “That’s What Friends Are For” and five songs that had the word ‘Love’ in the title … what a sweet world we lived in back in 1985. Meanwhile, the Bears were terrorizing the NFL, giving

Chicago its greatest football moment of this generation and then some. Dire Strait’s “Money For Nothing” definitely ranks as the best song on this list. Check out the

video then tell me different. For those diehard Bears’ fans I’ve included a link to the Bears’

“Super Bowl Shuffle“.

4) SUPER BOWL XLII

February 3, 2008

New York

Giants 17

New England Patriots 14

2007

1. Irreplaceable – Beyonce

2. Umbrella – Rihanna & Jay-Z

3. The Sweet Escape – Gwen Stefani & Akon

4. Big Girls Don’t Cry – Fergie

5. Buy U a Drank – T-Pain & Yung Joc

6. Before He Cheats – Carrie Underwood

7. Hey There Delilah – Plain White T’s

8. I Wanna Love You – Akon & Snoop Dogg

9. Say It Right – Nelly Furtado

10. Glamorous – Fergie & Ludacris

I’m not sure how many songs on this list I’ve actually heard, but given that Fergie appears twice in the Top 10 and Beyonce once, there’s just too much hot to keep out of my top five.  Oh yeah, Carrie Underwood doesn’t hurt the cause.

MY BOTTOM FOUR(In no particular order)

40) SUPER BOWL XXII

January 31, 1988

Washington

Redskins 42

Denver Broncos 10

1987

1. Sweet Child O’ Mine – Guns N’ Roses

2. With or Without You – U2

3. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For – U2

4. Sign O’ the Times – Prince

5. Faith – George Michael

6. Pour Some Sugar On Me – Def Leppard

7. Wishing Well – Terence Trent D’Arby

8. Bring the Noise – Public Enemy

9. (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life – Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes

10. I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) – Whitney Houston

Terence Trent D’Arby? He looks like he should have been the third member of Milli Vanilli.  And, if this is what Milli Vanilli would have sounded like, then I’m glad they lip-synched. There are plenty of quality bands in this group, such as Guns N’ Roses, U2, Def Leppard and Public Enemy, but too bad they charted the same year Terence Trent D’Arby did. It hurts me just to type that name.

41) SUPER BOWL III

January 12, 1969

New York

Jets 16

Baltimore Colts 7

1968

1. I Heard It Through The Grapevine – Marvin Gaye

2. Hey Jude – Beatles

3. All Along The Watchtower – Jimi Hendrix

4. Dock Of The Bay – Otis Redding

5. Mony Mony – Tommy James & the Shondells

6. Jumpin’ Jack Flash – Rolling Stones

7. Born To Be Wild – Steppenwolf

8. White Room – Cream

9. Sympathy For The Devil – Rolling Stones

10. Revolution – Beatles

Despite my ranking of the Beatles’ “Let It Be” in the top five, I find the Beatles to be vastly overrated. Thus, any year with two Beatles songs in the Top 10 will definitely rank at the bottom of my list.

42) SUPER BOWL II

January 14, 1968

Green Bay Packers 33

Oakland Raiders 14

1967

1. Respect – Aretha Franklin

2. Light My Fire – Doors

3. Sunshine Of Your Love – Cream

4. Purple Haze – Jimi Hendrix

5. A Day In The Life – Beatles

6. Whiter Shade Of Pale – Procol Harum

7. Somebody To Love – Jefferson Airplane

8. Soul Man – Sam & Dave

9. Strawberry Fields Forever – Beatles

10. Nights In White Satin – Moody Blues

See #41 above.

43) SUPER BOWL XXV

January 27, 1991

Buffalo Bills 19

New York Giants 20

1990

1. Nothing Compares 2 U – Sinead O’Connor

2. Mama Said Knock You Out – LL Cool J

3. Vogue – Madonna

4. Been Caught Stealing – Jane’s Addiction

5. Groove Is In The Heart – Deee-Lite

6. Enjoy The Silence – Depeche Mode

7. Man In The Box – Alice In Chains

8. U Can’t Touch This – MC Hammer

9. Unbelievable – EMF

10. Vision of Love – Mariah Carey

Tear the Pope’s picture in half on national television and you go right to the back of the list. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. I really hate to do this to LL Cool J and MC Hammer, but they understand.

There you have it, my list of the top four and the bottom four years in music over the last 43 years. I have included below the Top 10 songs for each of the previous 43 years. Feel free to send me your rankings complete with reasons for your rankings. I can be reached at
